Left, Right, Left: Espada Back to the Democrats

Espada PreviewScreenSnapz001 New York State Senator Pedro Espada—who helped engineer a coup to flip control of the Senate from Democratic to Republican hands—is apparently ready to switch back to the Democrats now that he has a "handshake deal" to be Majority Leader.

The double-double-cross comes after New York Governor David Paterson's bold move to appoint Richard Ravitch as lieutenant governor, a power that Senate Republicans (and a judge) don't believe Paterson has in the first place.

The fate of a host of issues hangs in the balance, including a bill to bring marriage equality to New York.

P.S. It may (or may not) help the marriage-equality cause, but...who would trust a handshake deal with this shady character?

UPDATE: A deal has been reached in the New York Senate. Should be a wild ride.

  1. So "A deal has been reached in the New York Senate." And Towleroad links to Americablog so we can follow its link in turn to the NY Times, which has the story. This pintless reliance on Americablog is disturbing and does Towleroad no credit.

  2. I agree with Billyboy. This post is lazy. A little analysis would have helped.

It seems likely that this is a bad development for marriage equality. It comes only a day after Espada met with 3 other renegade senators, including Ruben Diaz. It means that the Dems are back in complete control. That probably returns us to their original betrayal that was in operation prior to the coup. Following the deal cut with Diaz, they will once again say that they won't bring marriage up for a vote unless 32 senators have come out in favor. And then they will see that enough senators remain silent so that they don't have to act. The clock will run out, the deal with Diaz will have been satisfied, and we will go home with nothing. Then we will be asked to support the Dems so that next year we really and truly will get a vote.

  3. Espada et al, up to their old tricks again I see! Very clever, let the clock run down, say you need 32 votes, and muzzle enough Senators to insure that the marriage equality bill languishes for yet another year! Time to see to it that these clowns don't have another year. Get involved people! Follow your State Senators, know where they stand, and vote accordingly.

  6. The shamelessness of the NY State Democratic Party is on full display with the return of Sen. Espada to the "fold".

Make no mistake about what motivated the temporary defections of Pedro Espada and Hiram Monseratte to the Republican Party: racism and power.

Both Espada and Monseratte are notorious bigots when it comes to the civil and political relations between Blacks and Hispanics in New York.

Toss in Ruben Diaz, Sr., and his absolute hatred of LGBT people, and you have a toxic stew of power plays (to deny Malcom Smith--an honorable stalwart of Democratic and liberal politics and a Black man--to be leader of the NY State Senate and de facto leader of the State Democratic Party) and homophobia (all three have gone on record--especially Diaz, Sr., vociferously--that they are against "redefining marriage", although Espada has said he would support some kind of "civil union for gays".

Add to that mix the behind-the-scenes machinations of Tom Golisano (a miserable and wretched billionaire cretin who has tried and failed repeatedly to achieve electoral success in New York for a variety of offices) and you have a further element: a rich and powerful patron of extreme right-wing views and groups who will shamelessly use his vast fortune to overturn the outcomes of elections that displeased him.

Finally, the role of two Congressional Democrats--Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Matthew Crowley (Sunnyside, Queens) cannot be underestimated.

It was they who pressured State Senator Mark Sabini (Dem--Corona, Elmhurst) in spring of 2008 not to seek reelection as Senator because his seat should be "an Hispanic seat".

Sabini resisted such pressure at first but was told by Schumer that he (Sabini) would get no support from the NY State Democratic Party if Sabini decided he would seek reelection. In order to take the sting of humiliation away, Sabini was offered a high-paying administrative job in NY State government, which he unfortunately agreed to do.

Thus, the way was paved for Hiram Monserrate to be "nominated" for Sabini's Senate seat. Monserrate "won" the "Hispanic seat" (a safe and secure Democratic district), of course, but it was a pyrrhic victory.

The winners were the corrupt power brokers that contaminate New York City and State politics, and the losers are the people of New York City and New York State.

May the whole lot of them burn in hell.

  7. Correction: The former State Senator who was pressured not to seek reelection was John Sabini, not Mark Sabini.

    Sorry.

  9. Ok, who are we supporting in the next primaries against these two? They need to go. That much is clear.
