Minneapolis Pastor: Tornado a Warning to Gay-Loving Lutherans

John Piper, pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, wrote a blog post today interpreting a recent tornado in Minneapolis as a sign that Jesus Christ, who "controls the wind, including all tornados," sent down a twister because the Lutheran Church is considering lifting restrictions on gay clergy at a convention there this week.

MinneapolistornadoThe tornado damaged portions of the convention center where the Lutherans are meeting as well as the steeple of the Central Lutheran Church.

Concludes Piper: "The tornado in Minneapolis was a gentle but firm warning to the ELCA and all of us: Turn from the approval of sin. Turn from the promotion of behaviors that lead to destruction. Reaffirm the great Lutheran heritage of allegiance to the truth and authority of Scripture. Turn back from distorting the grace of God into sensuality. Rejoice in the pardon of the cross of Christ and its power to transform left and right wing sinners."

Lutheran Shortly after the storm hit, the 1,014 Lutherans passed a social statement by a one vote margin:

"The social statement is a long document that essentially says that the church will agree to disagree on the issue of same-sex relationships, but will neither punish congregations that decide to bless such relationships nor force congregations that reject blessing same-sex couples. 'This church also acknowledges that consensus does not exist concerning how to regard same-gender committed relationships, even after many years of thoughtful, respectful, and faithful study and conversation,' the statement says in part. “'We do not have agreement on whether this church should honor these relationships, uplift, shelter and protect them, or on precisely how it is appropriate to do so.' But LGBT Lutherans are hailing the vote, which came in at 676 to 338, exactly the 66.67 percent margin needed."

  1. May John Piper's god forgive him for his sin of distorting his bible into an instrument of hatefulness and judgement.

  2. John Piper is *nuts*. I've seen more than a few of his sermons in my religious history. He tries his hardest to be a "compassionate" Calvinist - but his rhetoric is so over-the-top, his theology so extreme, that no amount of his bizarre emotional pleas can cover up his blatant insanity.

  3. Don't you suppose, Pastor Piper, that if Super Jesus really wanted to send a message he would have waited until the Lutheran Church conventioners were actually in the convention center before whisking up his magic wind?

  4. It's nice to have someone who can tell me what Jesus (and God) really think and feel. Otherwise, I may have continued in my mistaken belief that the tornado was a sign of God's displeasure that the Lutherans did not lift all sanctions on Gay clergy. I mean really, if someone with a direct line to God doesn't interpret the weather for me, I might covince myself that God is a Liberal.

  5. In honor of Pastor Piper, I intend to wipe myself with a few pages torn from the Bible, which I conveniently keep on the top of the toilet tank.

  6. If God controls the wind, why did he give Pastor Piper gas?

  8. Then why do tornados hit Trailer parks with God fearing Christians?? I think God is punishing the city because people actually voted for Bat shit crazy Michelle Bachmann!

  10. My first reaction to this story was to laugh, but I quickly sobered up. Its so sad that people actually believe and follow idiots who spout this nonsense. He and I don't follow the same God.

  11. How silly. God clearly sent the tornado to Minneapolis to cause such fear and destruction as a warning to the Lutherans that they MUST embrace LGBT people fully, including as clergy. Pastor Piper's obscene twisting of the acts of God is the work of Satan, who wants to mislead the Lutherans when they meet in Minneapolis and have them embrace his, not God's, message of love. Those following the pastor had best check their souls for the Prince of Darkness already has one hand on their shoulder.

  13. Of course, just as the ELCA group approved the wonderful motion to accept God's plan for their flock, the skies cleared and Minneapolis had a wonderful sun-filled and blessed evening. This is clearly a sign that God is shining down his blessings on our city and the ELCA.

  14. I love retarded clergy. As a Christian with a little common sense (doesn't take much) you get your biggest chuckles of the day out of the mouthes of these hucksters preachers. This guy is a lulu. Though I kind of feel sorry for Jesus...because you know he wants nothing to do with these people. They are everything he fought against while on earth.

But what do you want to bet that Pastor Batshit voted for the short bus Congresswoman from the state too (you know who I'm talking about...) It's always fun when she opens her mouth, all sorts of crazy falls out.

Could someone find me a paying position where crazy rules? I need one of those jobs.

  15. Anchorage recently experienced a 5. plus earthquake, this following conservative Mayor Dan Sullivan's veto of an ordinance that would have added protection from discrimination to the GLBT community. If we applied the same "logoic", God must be sending a message to opponents of the ordinance, yes?

  16. So is this homophobe black so we can get some racist comments flowing in this post?

  17. I actually went to undergrad with one of the pastors on the Task Force on Human Sexuality. She's a sweet person, but very literal and rigid when it comes to her beliefs, and she has been very vocal about her opposition to allowing gay clergy period (whether committed or celibate).

The statement approved is very non-committal, but reflects the sentiments of a very politically diverse organization.

  18. So how much does this closet case scare out of poor peoples' pockets a year ?

Oh Yeah, and god sent a meteor crashing down on the dinasaurs because they were not nice to their neighbours.

  19. What the hell is wrong with people!!!!!

  20. So, following that logic, the fact that the tornado didn't hit gay-oriented churches in Minneapolis like the Metropolitan Community Church, the Urban Refuge Church or The Rock Church mean Jesus approves of the gay lifestyle. Gays win! Yay!!!!

  21. How do these guys explain, that e.g. Scandinavia, probably the most liberal corner of the earth - is still standing? And tornadoes, earthquakes etc. - not really a problem there. And large parts of the people there, oh shock, are Lutherans!

  22. George: Michele Bachmann comes from a very different district than where the storms where. She is crazy, but Minneapolis city is the 5th district, represented by Keith Ellison. Bachmann represents the 6th district, which wraps around the northern and far western suburbs and makes it out to Saint Cloud.

  23. I see John Piper is saying all the people hit with the tornadoes in Minneapolis are not in grace with god and are being punished . if i were one of the people that were hit i would be suing him for such a statement about my character and standing.

  25. RELIGION is the ONLY thing that makes Homosexuals WRONG. This is a good demonstration of that fact.

Until we end the religious definition of homosexuals we will never have equality.

Religion is the problem. ALL Religion. Even the misleading "gay-friendly" bunch.

We are NOT WRONG - Religion IS.
