The Mercury News profiles openly gay Campbell, California mayor Evan Low: "One day his dad asked him a question: On a scale of 1 to 10 — 1 being completely gay and 10 being completely straight — what number was he? 'I'm a 10,' his dad said. 'I'm a 2 or a 3,' his son replied. And suddenly his dad knew for sure. Evan Low says his father, whom he considers one of his heroes, accepted his sexuality from that day forward. 'He told me, 'I raised you. You're my son, with my blood and my DNA. So it came from me.''"

  3. I know the story about Evan Low is meant to be heartwarming (and it is -- so many people still have horrible tales of telling their parents), but something always bothers me when I hear these coming-out stories that end with "even though you're gay, I love you" or "well, it's just the way God made you" or (paraphrasing in this case) "I raised you and you're my DNA so it comes from me." It just always smacks a little of pity, charity and/or resignation, like praising your ugly or stupid child by saying "it doesn't matter to me, I love you however you are."

I guess I feel the correct response in an ideal society where having a gay child is TRULY a matter of indifference, should be something like "Okay, that's nice dear, now go clean up for dinner." Sort of like when you tell your parents what you did at recess at school.

  4. Question for Southern Utah University (University?!) What the heck is "an alternative sexual orientation"? I'm not aware of anyone who claims to have an alternative to the one they have.
