  1. It is nice to see the moneyed bigots in California are still willing to spend good money on protecting their constitutional right to be a homophobe, even while their dysfunctional state descends into bankruptcy.

  4. Those Dr. Seuss cartoons are fascinating. I have a book of his "forgotten" or early work, some of it a little more risque than his later works for children. Based on the cartoon with the black guys commenting on the sign, as well as other Seuss books like "The Sneetches," I'd like to think that he wasn't inherently a racist man, but his patriotic fervor got the best of him when drawing those WWII sketches. Can anyone recall some less-offensive sketches he did of Asians in any of his books?

  5. @DBack, did you check out the book? I took History of Japan here at UMass with Prof. Minear, guy really dug up some nasty stuff from that era and wasn't afraid to shove it in our faces. It's no coincidence that violence is usually preceded by dehumanizing the enemy...

  6. Interesting to read the comments on Disqus. Everything has a context and so it is with Dr. Seuss' drawings. If this is the only propaganda piece Dr. Seuss did, I don't even think it's worth mentioning except as an historical curiosity. Japan had attacked the U.S., Russia was our ally and white racism against Black Americans who wanted to serve their country (and were forbidden to do so for all the same reasons that are used against gays and lesbians). The Japanese caricature is fully in keeping with Americans' anger at that time. I don't excuse the drawing, but a little historical context is always helpful when we begin to shine a 21st century spotlight on mid-20th century mores.

  7. I also might add that the link to the photo-shoot outtakes of the Jersey Shore boys shows four men who obviously are living a little TOO large. Three of them are showing just a little bit too much belly. The fourth--The Situation--is getting there. Fame is a bastard, ain't it?
