Newsweek Reporter Sentenced to Six Months in Jail For Photo of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 'Gay Kiss'

Ahmadinejad

Maziar Bahari, a Newsweek reporter who was jailed after covering the Iranian elections, subjected to a show trial, and after 180 days of imprisonment, released and allowed to leave the country, received a sentence in absentia of 13 years and six months, plus 74 lashes.

CNN's Fareed Zakaria reports that the 13 years and 74 lashes were for reporting on the clash between the Iranian military and protesters. The six months, he say, were for the photo you see above. A friend of Maziar's had posted it on his Facebook wall, and authorities said that Maziar was insulting Ahmadinejad by implying he is gay.

But, of course, there are no gays in Iran, at least according to Ahmadinejad.

  2. If you think about it, M displays all the characteristics of a closeted homo. The bigger than life, egotistical persona, the denial that homosexuality exists in his country, the continued denouncement of homosexuals, etc. The guy is a first class bully and his hatred is a significant sign of what lies inside his closet.

While I understand this is probably a cultural thing, it sure makes for a great excuse to slip a little tongue in. In fact, he's probably enjoying this a little too much. Ahmad, Ahmad, Ahmad, come out wherever you are.

  3. UH, ANDY -- WHERE IS YOUR NEWS STORY ABOUT THE ISRAELI SLAUGHTER OF PEACE ACTIVISTS DELIVERING RELIEF SUPPLIES??!!!

  4. Relief supplies like guns and weapons, haaretz? Yeah, "relief"...and they were given fair warning.

    Posted by: TANK | May 31, 2010 3:40:16 PM

  5. Also, the "relief" effort was funded by the turkish charity, IHH, which is a well known front group for muslim terrorists.

  6. They were in international water, Tank, and the "guns and weapons", by Israel's own video, were limited to slingshots and marbles, pipes, clubs and other makeshift weapons and two handguns seize from the Israeli commandos who repelled down from helicopters directly onto the Turkish boat's deck.

Unlawfully boarding a ship in international waters is called piracy and it is wrong off the coast of Somalia as well as off the coast of Gaza.

As for IHH's reputation, it's utterly irrelevant. By attacking the Turkish ship, Israel has effective attacked Turkey. Turkey is a member of NATO, as is the US, and should Turkey decide to aggressively pursue this and invoke article 5, the US will be compelled to count this as an attack on the US by Israel. This means, depending on Turkey's actions, Israel has once again precipitated an international confrontation via overreaction and has potentially force the US to either denounce Israel in no uncertain terms or renounce its NATO responsibilities.

Your flippant dismissal of this with a "THEY HAD WMDs!...now we just have to find them..." explanation and some sort of weird, blame-the-victim, date rape excuse belies an utter lack of understanding of the depth and breadth of the issues at stake.

  7. "They were in international water"

According to turkey and the front group for muslim terrorism, IHH. You choose to believe the anti-israeli spin becuase you're an antisemite, though you probably call yourself an "antizionist".

"and the "guns and weapons", by Israel's own video, were limited to slingshots and marbles, pipes, clubs and other makeshift weapons and two handguns seize from the Israeli commandos who repelled down from helicopters directly onto the Turkish boat's deck."

Once again, according to antisemitic groups. I await the full investigation to see what actual weapons they may have been trasporting to gaza IN DEFIANCE OF THE BLOCKADE. It is in the best interest of muslim extremists and antisreali activists to have martyrs, because it's one of the few ways that they can advance their anti-israel cause. It is in the best interest of palestinian leaders to continue this conflict, as they have made fortunes at the expense of their countrymen in terms of aid and donations.

"Unlawfully boarding a ship in international waters is called piracy and it is wrong off the coast of Somalia as well as off the coast of Gaza."

Not if they were transporting weapons to gaza in defiance of the blockade. Then it's not piracy--then it's preemption.

"As for IHH's reputation, it's utterly irrelevant."

To someone who believes their spin lock stock and barrel, of course it would be. But you are an antisemite who isn't to be taken seriously on these matters. It is extremely relevant to assessing this situation, as they have a vested interest in lying and painting israel in the worst possible light. You are merely regurgitating their propaganda, and it is highly suspect.

"By attacking the Turkish ship, Israel has effective attacked Turkey."

So if I'm arrested in france, france is declaring on america? LOL!

"Turkey is a member of NATO, as is the US, and should Turkey decide to aggressively pursue this and invoke article 5, the US will be compelled to count this as an
attack on the US by Israel."

This wasn't an attack on turkey, but someone as foaming at the mouth and antisrael as you are, who wants nothing but the destruction of israel (because you hate jews) and frantically beating off to the prospect of this happening--which it most assuredly will not. Antisemitics like you are only happy with the blood of jews.

"This means, depending on Turkey's actions, Israel has once again precipitated an international confrontation via overreaction and has potentially force the US to either denounce Israel in no uncertain terms or renounce its NATO responsibilities."

False dilemma based on a radical political ideology that causes suffering and death from you. This was not an attack on turkey, but the extremists on that flotillia who very well may have been shipping weapons to gaza in defiance of the blockade, that could be used to kill israeli civilians.

"Your flippant dismissal of this with a "THEY HAD WMDs!...now we just have to find them..." explanation and some sort of weird, blame-the-victim, date rape excuse belies an utter lack of understanding of the depth and breadth of the issues at stake."

And your blame israel first because it wins points with your radical coterie of antisemites in spite of any fact or in the absence of any of them is a strange way to perpetuate your hated of jewish people. I guess I could call it a victory that you can't just come out and be an antisemite without being automatically dismissed as a lunatic who has no place in polite society. But, it's really the same mentality.

  8. So typical of "Tank" to come to the defense of murderers.

  9. Poster at JoeMyGod in a thread about Mary Cheney:

"She has quite a few open and closeted gay allies here in Florida who are wildly cheering on McCollum, even in spite of the Rekers affair.

Many of the gay men in Sarasota and Tampa are far, far right-wing bar bunnies who openly mock marriage equality, and who voted for McCain/Palin enthusiastically because they don't "do" blacks.

GOProud and GayPatriot have lots of fellow travelers in this area."

    "Tank's" kinf of people.

  10. Yes, murderers...when two of those "muderers" were shot and one suffered severe head trauma. I suppose when a large group of people assaulting you form ranks around you (an angry and armed mob) with the intention of killing you, you should just calmly and collectedly ask them to stop, let them do it...well, in your case, DE (because they'd be exonerated given who you are). Who defended the british soldiers accused of the boston massacre? John Adams...and he won (angry mobs against armed soldiers is a recipe for tragedy). And no, I'm not siding with israel and its official statement (I don't trust either side); I'm waiting for a more unbiased report.

Further, the intent of this trip by these individuals was to disrupt the blockade of gaza (not provide aid). This is clear given that the organizers said so, and refused to have the israeli navy transport the aid. I haven't read anything about the cargo being cleared, but I wouldn't be surprised if it contained weapons.

So the next time I disagree with a country's policy (like the blockade--I disagree with it), I can challenge its sovereignty and expect not to be interfered with.

  11. And apparently your kind of people, DE, execute gays for being gay...because palestinians subscribe to shari'ah and so do the iranians...and if you were to go live your life in any middle eastern country that wasn't israel, you'd better marry a woman and go back into the closet if you want to continue living. DOUCHE.

  12. "You choose to believe the anti-israeli spin becuase you're an antisemite, though you probably call yourself an "antizionist". "

Hmm, there really should be a corollary to Godwin's Law, stating that as the liklihood of an internet conversation approaches the limit of "OMGNAZIFAIL", the constant of voicing any sort of critical opinion towards Israel is "OMGUAREANTISEMITE!", provided the incorrect equality of "antizionist=antisemite" is referenced.

However, since you're more than willing to make all sorts of snap judgments about my motivations while claiming to be reserving judgment on the incident because "you don't trust either side", the cognitive dissonance that must be commonplace in your head evidently drowns out logical, rational discussion, so good luck with that.

    Posted by: Quakerjono | May 31, 2010 7:33:57 PM

  13. To be antizionist is to be more than opposed to certain israeli policies (which would be expected, as certain israeli policies should be criticized harshly). It is to be opposed to the existence of israel. And that is rooted in antisemitism...because, take the u.s., for example...no one's calling for it to be dissolved in spite of the fact that its human rights violations would make those of israel look...awful cute. Especially what it's done in iraq. Take any of the 125 nations on this planet (of around 250) who've done far worse things than israel to indigenous people...and yet israel is the only one that has no right to exist...it's beyond curious, isn't it? Not to jews, it's not. Nope...to us it's par for the course.

    Posted by: TANK | May 31, 2010 7:53:41 PM

  14. Everything Israel does is perfectly justifiable to "Tank" becuase the Palestians are "worse."

Makes perfect logical sense, doesn't it?

  18. Oh please people, why do gays get so worked up about Palestine and Israelis. Both of them have no time for the gay community and would willingly exterminate all gays. Let them sort this shit out themselves.

  20. Bigoted racist Jews invariably defend everything Israel does. Additionally, there are idiot gentile bigots who have been co-opted into supporting that bitty little country. Israel continues to capture billions of dollars in aid and grants from the AIPAC captured U.S. congress. Israel continues to be ever moreso a murderous racist theocracy engaged in denying rights to others. Gays and straights alike can recognize that! All gays and straights should oppose such atrociousness.

  21. I wholeheartedly agree with my Tank!

Isrealis have the right to protect themselves and to keep their citizens safe!

Anyone who has a brain would know that in the past 15+ years, international media has shown that it's always the Palestinans parading their 7 yr olds through the streets with machine guns, or firing rockets into CIVILIAN neighbourhoods after each and every cease-fire have been declared.

For me, it's quite easy to choose sides.
