Vatican 'Saddened And Troubled' By Gay Priests

The trouble with the Catholic Church is endless. The Vatican issued a response yesterday to the cover story put out by the Italian magazine Panorama in which reporters secretly recorded several gay priests at gay clubs and having casual sex with strangers.

Pan The Guardian reports on some of the revelations from the exposé: "'One priest, a Frenchman in his 30s identified as Father Paul, attended a party at which there were two male prostitutes then said Mass the following morning before driving them to the airport, Panorama reported. A photo on its website claimed to show the priest in his dog collar but without his trousers with a gay man who acted as decoy for the magazine. In other shots, priests were shown apparently kissing Panorama's collaborator."

"A member of the clergy quoted by the magazine put the proportion of gay priests in the Italian capital at '98%'. The Rome diocese insisted the vast majority of priests in the city were 'models of morality for all', while adding that the number of gay clergyman was 'small, but not to be written off as isolated cases.'"

The Vatican said that it is "saddened and troubled" by the scandal. According to the AFP, "'The Rome diocese pledged to pursue 'with rigour any behaviour that is unworthy of the priestly life'. It added: 'No one obliges them to remain priests and keep enjoying the advantages. 'Consistency demands that they reveal themselves. We don't wish them any harm, but we cannot accept that the honour of all the others is dragged through the mud because of their behaviour.'"

Interestingly, Panorama magazine is owned by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

  1. Poor, delusional, self-destructive men. They are the religious equivalents of Log Cabin Rethuglicans.

  2. The Vatican has been a freaking ZOO ever since they murdered the pro-gay Pope, Pope John Paul I, back in 1978. If only JP1 had lived... What a wonderful world it would be today.

  3. @hephaestion

It won't be a "wonderful world" until the separation of church and state is practiced at every level of government.

If organizations like the mormon church want to participate in the political process and donate money to their candidates of choice, their tax exempt status should be permanently revoked and they should have to fully disclose where every penny goes. It might not break their bank, but might be a wake-up call for their congregations.

  4. Whatever "honour" this institution might have once had was stripped away completely when they began litigating with abuse survivors.

  5. They are saddened and troubled because the new revelations mean they will have to sell more property to pay off victims.

The Roman Church - one of the great con jobs of all time.

  6. @justiceontherocks, just because they are gay and breaking their celibacy vows does not make the child molesters. The Vatican doesn't even address the situation with child molesters as long as they can target the gays.

As for "Panorama magazine is owned by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi"; pretty much all media and all theaters in Italy are owned by Berlusconi. This is one of the reasons he has so much power and will stay Prime Minister as long as he wants. As an Italian friend says to me, "we know our government is corrupt but don't they look good in their suits."

  7. what is the news here?

80% of priests are gay, 10% are pedophiles and the rest are straight.

where else is a gay man going to be safe from the pressure from society, if in the closet?

at least these set are with consenting adults.

  8. Does the list of gay priests in Rome include the pope? Red Prada shoes? Who does he think he's kidding. Let them purge the priesthood of gay men. There won't be enough priests for at least 1/2 the parishes worldwide.

  9. Long ago,, in the army, they taught me that I had to be willing to sacrifice some of my people in battle for the greater good. Fortunately, I missed VNam.

I feel sorry in a way for the gay priests. But on the other hand, they continue to work for one of the most regressive, and over its long history perhaps the most murderous institution in the western world.

Its time for the priests to UNIONIZE, and tell the vatican where to go. And tell the truth from the pulpit.

And if they get thrown out, its tough for them, but possibly they can take lots of their parishioners to the Episcopal church, which is a shining light upon the world for its two gay bishops, with another one 1 of 4 to be chosen for bishop of Utah.

And for the others, well maybe they can find work in sectarian social groups. And continue to tell the story of ultimate evil in the name of God

the church of Adoph Hitler still unexcommunicated. Who btw got elected on the hatred of Jews fostered by the church for a millenia.

The church which sided with the fascist dictator Franco during the spanish civil war in 1936-1939. The church of the Inquisition. The church of the crusades that murdered 40 to 50 million Muslims, no wonder they have their own nuts.

And the church of the Churchfuhrer RATZInger, who now hates gays.

  10. The Roman Catholic Church attracts gay priests by design. How convenient, for sexually suppressed men, to hide in the church, under the guise of "celibacy".

  11. Who hasn't ever met at least one R.C. priest in a gay bar?

  13. I feel anger at the hypocrisy of priests who hide their homosexuality while publicly voicing consent to villainizing & scapegoating others who are non-clergy. Yet I simultaneously feel anger at a religion that drives gay men to hate themselves so much that they delude themselves into believing their hope lies in celibacy.

  15. Who does the Pope think he is fooling? The first Holy Roman Emperor (When the Pope was also crowned Emperor of the European Catholic countries), had three Wives (at the same time); Three known mistresses, and 27 Children. It was only after the Priesthood became more and more populated with Gay men, that the church outlawed married priests.(why would they want straits interfering with their love?)

(Insidentilly, Did you ever see a fat, ugly, Swiss Guard?)

  16. The church outlawed marriage to prevent a priest's spawn from getting church property.

  17. A dog collar? Please. That's so 1976.

    Posted by: Wilberforce | Jul 26, 2010 5:25:21 PM

  18. Need I mention--the latest publication from the Vatican stated the following rules:

    Ordaining a woman = excommunication

Molesting a child = loss of your collar, but not excommunication

And I don't think it's too far from anyone's mind that this is the Pope that let the Nazis back in.
Anyone starting to see a pattern?

  19. Did they really have to put pink polish on the man's fingernails? I mean, really -- talk about a tired stereotype!

  20. Catholic church ministers seems a lot of fun!

    Posted by: Luis | Jul 27, 2010 4:46:13 AM

  21. This has less to do with what these priests DID do than with Berlusconi (who owns the magazine) trying to discredit the Vatican, which is interfering way too much in domestic politics for his liking. Any controversy to detract from the fact his country is in trouble while he's at the helm is not only welcome but necessary.

    Posted by: tancredi | Jul 27, 2010 6:58:04 AM

  22. @RANDY I know! They could have at least used platinum or gold polish, maybe added some emeralds or sapphires; it is the Vatican after all! Actually I thought the same thing: gay = nail polish? Really?
