A Gay Portrait of James Dean

James Preston, who stars in ABC's The Gates, is getting some attention in a new trailer about James Dean, or, rather, gay James Dean, that's being passed around the blogs this week. No real info on when you might be able to view the film, which has the lengthy title Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait of James Dean, but the trailer's rather pretty, as is Preston.

  1. I always thought his character on The Gates should come out. Something about him sets off the gaydar. And with a lesbian vampire already, they need a gay male werewolf.

  3. *Sigh* Alas, no trailer. . .

  4. The best book on James Dean is "Live Fast, Die Young -- The Wild Ride of Making Rebel Without a Cause" by Lawrence Frascella and Al Weisel. Among other things it establishes with utter definitiveness that James Dean was GAY NOT BI !!!!!!!

  5. this isn't really going to be a movie, is it? maybe it's a (film) student film or a short. it seems like a commercial. very glossy, no storyline just random headshots (every "scene" they show is people posing for the camera.) the music does not go with the imagery at all. it seems over-produced/over-directed. (the trailer is at the link at vimeo.)

  6. by going to iconoclastic following the link above you can see the trailer. it wasn't that hard to figure out. he almosts pulls off the illusion, but it doesn't stand up to full daylight. in halflight it works.james dean's mouth was something like a vulva. when he was sexual his limps seemingly became engorged, full and pouty. the masochism lurked just beneath the machismo. there are only a few who have ever had that kind of raw sexual energy and vulnerability combined. while i am inclined to elevate the sex symbol of my teen years, in truth there are still some today. jonathon rhys-meyers is one such.

  7. WOW. Astonishing images, astonishing period detail, and astonishing actor :). Interesting sexual-political content, too. Cannot wait to see this!

  8. Finally, finally, finally! Like A Single Man, a film that cares about beauty -- and male beauty. The girl is nothing to scoff at, either. I'm a hopeless romantic for Old Hollywood glam!

  9. "The Gates" suffers because it can't match the sex & blood HBO offers... but I watch it faithfully anyway.

Colton Haynes is my werewolf heartthrob. He's been in other TV series & there's a number of boy-on-boy kissing photo spreads of him floating around the web, but I don't really know much else about him. I let my imagination take over.

  10. What a hottie James Dean was; I saw a simple old B&W pic of him in his draws and wearing glasses that's more erotic than most modern day hardcore porn.

  11. This is total crap, cannibalizing Dean this way. His actual life was much more complex and interesting than this cliched homo fantasy. Dean deserves better.

  12. Loving the duality of the teaser trailer. Dean was a devil in disguise, but mostly a devil :P Can't wait for this.

Supporting actor is attractive too. And the sets. Hello, A Single Man of 2011, let's do this!

  13. Sal Mineo's doey-eyed crush on James Dean in Rebel: one of the remarkably gay portrayals in '50s movies.

  15. i tried to re-word my post a couple of times so it didn't sound like all those negative-for-the-sake-of-being-negative postings you read because that really wasn't what i was trying to be. but i really don't think the trailer was very good and i was stating my reasons.

  16. Doesn't this seem more like a guy (this unknown writer/director Matthew Mishory) using the memory of a famous legend to make a name for himself. And, hey, even using the gay angle to get websites like this to pay attention. I mean, do we really need another independent biopic about a famous person who had two lives?

It's the James Dean obsessive in me, but I'm cynical about this project.

  17. I honestly can't wait. Love the trailer! More movies like this please. The cast is perfect.

  18. Trailer looks more like a perfume commercial than an actual movie-the actors are pretty and has nice black and white photography. An honest biography about the brilliant Sal Mineo would make a more interesting movie.

  19. Love how this trailer perfectly capture the period but feels modern at the same time. And that James Preston looks every bit a star! Get this in theaters, please.
