Cindy McCain Repeals Her View ON DADT

Cindy McCain has issued a clarification, this a day after she appeared in a viral ad for the NoH8 campaign which included her strong words of support for the LGBT community and her objection to the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, a view that is at odds with that of her husband's. In the video she is heard saying "our government treats the LGBT community like second class citizens, why shouldn't they?" and "They can't serve our country openly."

Now it apears as if she's taking back that last bit. Late yesterday, McCain sent out this message on Twitter:

Americablog is fuming:

"Did she lie today or lie yesterday?  Either way, she's a liar, and she should be removed from the NOH8 video because, as of right now, Cindy McCain is a hater.  Not to mention, great message she just sent to gay youth.  If someone pressures you, cave and support hate."

Sounds like she's backpedaling simply because, as Dan Choi pointed out to Keith Olbermann last night, her "very significant" public objection to DADT "underscores the values behind the repeal effort," something her husband opposes.

Watch that interview, which apparently aired before McCain's tweet, AFTER THE JUMP.

  1. Oops. Thanks a lot, Cindy. You can't have it both ways. I guess Gramps's cold old hands can still give spankings. Listen to Meghan, honey, you'll be happier in the end.

  2. Holy shit. I'm putting my money on her having said what she really thinks in the NOH8 video. It wasn't some shoot-from-the-hip soundbyte that she blurted out in an unguarded moment. It was planned, scripted, rehearsed, shot, edited, produced, and broadcast.

The backtracking is sinister, almost like she's been threatened with something (and I'm not a conspiracy junkie, this is just too transparent.)

  3. Well you can't say John McCain isn't kinky, because he obviously spanked his wife bigtime.

  4. Knew she was a flake...but someone on the no8h campaign should also resign for this...too many famewhores ruin the integrity of this important issue...

  5. John hid her pills until she Tweeted on her Blackberry.

  6. Get her off the NOH8 campaign NOW!!!!

  7. I sincerely doubt that Johnny-boy persuaded his wife to the other side of the issue based on a rational argument, he just shut her up about it. In other words, he did exactly what the white privileged patriarch would do – remind his subordinates, whether they be female, gay, black, hispanic, poor, or whatever, what their place is.

  10. John has something to do with this big time. I sure hope Meghan won't cave in.

  11. Since all their money come sfrom her side of the family, she should just kick his ass to the curb and be who she really is. I'm going with what naughtylola and Joshua said above, it's probably her really opinion in the ad and the Old Man read her the riot act and shut her up. If she were the type who could do without the approval of the father-figure, she could dump him and relax.

  12. Cindy, if you hide John's Aricept, he will soon be delusional and you can just walk away. If he threatened you with bodily harm, have him arrested. After his rant about no one being drummed ou of the service for being gay, we all realized he was in denial; if he is a danger to himself or others, you have remedies. I'm just saying...

  13. And yet some of you still give her the benefit of the doubt. Many of you just aren't ready...the "diva" worship is too strong (a byproduct of internalized homophobia, maybe...response to it?). She's an adult, and independent, and fully capable of making up her own mind--which she did here.

And what is the purpose of talking about mccain being senile or suffering from dementia? Guy's just as sharp he was when he was in his twenties flying skyhawks (which would make sense if you knew how poorly he flew them), and is FULLY RESPONSIBLE for his bigoted beliefs and actions. Don't give him a pass by suggesting that he's not all there. And he's going to live a very long time if his mother's any indication (she's still alive). He's a vile bigoted POS, and a corrupt melanoma on the face of american politics that needs to be removed.

  14. Let me get this right, she believes gays should get married but in a sudden retreat and surrender, believes that they shouldn't serve openly in the military.

I too imagine John McCain had his hand in this reversal because she made him look like a jackass, and as anyone in D.C. will tell you, John McCain is a spiteful, nasty, mean little prick.

John McCain will be remembered for two things in his life, being captured by the North Vietnamese and unleashing Sarah Palin on the populace of the United States. There's a legacy to be proud of.

  15. Seems like she just read the full script of the PSA and then they edited it. Didn't even realize she was saying something contradictory to her husband... or didn't even know what she was reading at all. They of course edited it to seem like she was specifically hitting her husband.

What a dumbass. Thank god she will never become First Lady.

  16. McCain wasn't captured by the north vietnamese so much as he surrendered. Captured is way too patriotic. See, he was such an inept pilot that he landed in a POW camp because he couldn't read a fucking map.

  19. She'd be in the top 1% of cougars and she's got all the money and the 8 (or is it 9? Or 7? Who can remember?) houses so she should just dump grandpa and start getting some.

And how do we know she tweeted the message? I doubt John would know how to turn on her iPhone if he found it, but maybe he sent a telegram to Sarah Palin asking for instructions.

  20. What I want to know is,has she been seen in the last day or two with an extra layer of make-up on her face? Or maybe she is just an emotionally battered wife. Either way, this double-standard two-step is what you get when you ask a Republican to support anything in the way of human rights.

Posted by: Kyle Sullivan | Nov 13, 2010 1:44:14 PM

  21. Republicans are not our allies. Period.

I still have no idea what her intentions were in getting involved in the NOH8 campaign... other than to possibly net a few R votes from gays who are too stupid to realize how angrily & aggressively her husband (and most other Republicans) are working against us

I think the Republicans picked the worst point in history to launch a culture war with us - the lgbt community is finally getting mobilized

it's all gonna end up biting Republicans in the ass - none of the right's politicians are wise enough to realize that we are not going away & we are getting stronger every day

  22. Tank's right.

  23. She didn't lie on either day. She's just a mentally unstable prescription pill addict. Certifiable. Cuckoo. Ready for the snake pit.

What I can't fathom is why she never hooked that cow daughter of hers on diet pills.

  24. I knew it. People are frustrated with Obama and his administration on not delivering promise fast enough on GLBT issues, but one thing I KNEW as well is that we can never trust republican. Period. They are much worse.

  25. I'm speechless. It's just shit like this which cause young gay people to be so disillusioned. It has gotten alot better as I've gotten older, but I also now have a thicker (and more wrinkled - LOL) skin. In the age of Facebook, Twitter, etc. there isn't very many places to hide. We've really got to all come together and make all this gay hate stuff socially unacceptable.
