Hawaii Panel Sends Civil Union Bill to Full House for Vote

The Hawaii House Judiciary Committee has approved a civil union bill by a vote of 11-2, sending it to the full house for a vote. The Senate approved a similar bill 19-6 in late January.

The Star-Advertiser reports: Hawaii

The state House Judiciary Committee voted last night to approve a civil-unions bill with amendments to ensure that the relationships are recognized in the tax code and are under the jurisdiction of family court.

The bill would allow same-sex and heterosexual couples to enter into civil unions and receive the same rights, benefits and responsibilities as marriage under state law. The changes — recommended by the state Attorney General's Office — mean that if approved by the House, the bill must go back before the state Senate, which passed the bill last month, before going to Gov. Neil Abercrombie for his signature.

The House is expected to vote late this week or early next week.

  1. I wonder if Linda Lingle is kicking herself yet.

For all the "protecting marriage" these people do, I hope they realize the number one method to deter national youth from marrying is the establishment of another system for gay and straight couples that is not called "marriage". We saw it in France with PACS. We saw it in the Netherlands and in other countries in Europe.

Where you establish something for all couples that is fundamentally like marriage without the word, young couples flock to it.

I wonder if that will happen here... Maybe then the conservative base will realize that after all of their empty rhetoric, they weren't fighting to protect a word - they were fighting to enforce political discrimination against a minority group.

  2. The momentum here is great. We should have a bill ready for the Governor's signature within a couple weeks.

And thanks for the new picture including Kauai and Niihau Andy!

  3. The inclusion of straight couples is just a step toward permanent second-class status.

  4. GREAT! I'll be there in September with my partner for our committment ceremony, so we can make it somewhat "official" while we're there. We're bringing about 100 people to the island to celebrate. Keep going Hawaii!!
