In Close 13-12 Vote, Minnesota House Panel Advances Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment

Minnesota's House will vote on an anti-gay marriage amendment already passed by the state's Senate after a committee advanced the measure this morning on a tight vote, the Minnesota Independent reports:

MinnesotaOn Wednesday morning, the House Committee on Rules and Administration approved an amendment that would codify a ban on gay marriage within the Minnesota Constitution by a vote of 13 to 12. One Republican, Rep. Tim Kelly of Red Wing, joined the DFL in voting against the measure. The bill heads to a House floor vote. The committee took no public testimony before the vote. DFLers pleaded with Republicans on the committee.

The vote was apparently met with vocal protest:

As the roll call was being taken, several protesters shouted “Shame!” and “You are damaging my life and my family!” One was dragged from the committee room.

Five Republican votes are needed to defeat the amendment in the full House, according to Outfront Minnesota.

  2. So the daily legislative banning of gay marriage in Minnesota continues - Target must be so happy.

Still, there is much to rejoice over - these men and women are on the wrong side of history - and some, if not most, likely know it. Their cowardice, their ignorance, their rabid hate -- is yet again, and again, and again - a matter of public record -- but this can only end - as it must - with disgrace.

They know it - and we know it.

  3. Anyone know if there is any chance of geting those 5 votes? Given some of the recent polls there may be a real chance this could backfire on the Republicans. Maybe there are five who are smart enough to realize that there is significant political risk in pushing this.
