HRC's Joe Solmonese Discusses NOM's 'Underperformance' in NY Marriage Equality Battle: VIDEO

HRC's Joe Solmonese joined Lawrence O'Donnell, who told Solmonese that he attended NYC's Gay Pride parade and noticed a euphoria that he hadn't seen in recent years. O'Donnell asked Solmonese if that euphoria is justified with regard to battles in other states going forward.

  1. How sad that this is what organizations like NOM and the Catholic church are pouring their money into. If they want to go the social issue route with politics, it's going to be a losing battle for them.

  2. How sad and how baffling that people continue to give NOM money. NOM wasn't just ineffective in the New York marriage fight, they weren't even a factor. They failed in DC, Delaware, and Illinois. they failed to repeal domestic partnerships in Washington state, which NOM fought as a battle to save marriage. Now NOM is asking for more and more money to go after Republicans who voted for equality in NY. Why would marriage equality opponents continue to throw good money after bad? Those NY Repulicans NOM is targeting have big-time Wall Street GOP money men behind them. They really don't have much to worry about from NOM.

  3. NOM did manage to get marriage equality repealed in Maine after our congress passed a bill legalizing SSM back in 2009. They organized a people's veto and managed to win by about 52%-48%. Don't underestimate their ability to rile up the evangelicals and other self-righteous members of our society ... BUT now thanks to NY, I wouldn't be surprised to see SSM back on the ballot again in 2012, which we would probably win thanks to it being an election year and 3 more years of solid LGBT progress.

On that note ... assuming Prop 8 gets struck down by the end of 2011 ... what a 12 months that would be for us. DADT repealed, DOMA no longer defended in court, NY legalizing SSM through legislation and California legalizing SSM through a court decision. Hot damn.

  4. Not to split hairs here, but the HRC has underperformed in every recent major political (equality) movement. Asking Joe Solomnese to speak on the issue seems to give the HRC some sort of credit in the win, which they don't deserve...AT ALL. They do little more (with all that fundraising) than throw big parties...errr..."fundraisers."

  5. Wow, the dude goes 1-8 against NOM and struts around like he's run a remotely-effective organization? He must have a really large penis.

  6. Pot disses Kettle, news at 11!

Through relentless self-promotion the HRC has branded itself as the "premiere gay rights organization" without ever managing to achieve anything other than flawlessly planned and self-congratulatory banquets. Obama has certainly done much to raise their visibility though that's most likely because the HRC rolls over like a well-trained dog at his command. Their relationship with him is akin to that of a Twilight fan-girl with Robert Pattinson, no discernment, just cow-eyed mooning.

  7. The (fear) tactics NOM & other organizations of their ilk don't play well legislatively. Where they do play well is w/ the general populace. It is w/ the general populace where they can run ads full of lies designed to scare stupid straights.

And like others have said, Solmonese/HRC shouldn't diss anyone about ineffectiveness.

  8. Seems to give the HRC some sort of credit?
He started the segment introducing Joe, saying HRC was pivotal!!
You're absolutly right, HRC DID NOTHING in NY that they should be taking credit for.
LGBT people need to start educating their straight friends about what a lousy organization HRC is, and that they should give their money elsewhere!!

  9. What about HRC's underperformance? They're useless.

  10. I know its very fashionable to trash HRC, but their role in NY WAS pivotal. From raising money, to providing organizers on the ground in key districts, to doing the actual lobbying on both sides of the aisle, they were forced by Cuomo to play well in the sandbox with the other state groups and actually proved effective this time around. They do deserve some credit.

  11. I had to send "Last Word" an e-mail today and advise them that there are far better LGBT leaders out there to interview than d-bag Joe. I changed channels when the interview started. What rubbish!
