MP Protests Anti-Gay Pastor's UK Visit

John_Hagee The United Kingdom regularly bars incendiary public figures from entering their territory.

Homophobic and racist radio host Michael Savage, for example, was banned in 2009, as were Westboro Baptist Church's Fred and Shirley Phelps.

And Islamic leader named Sheikh Raed Salah, who regularly espouses anti-Israeli sentiment, has also been banned from Britain.

Why, then, the UK is allowing American pastor John Hagee, a man who claims God sent Hurricane Katrina to punish New Orleans' gay-inclusive culture, to romp around their soil?

That's what Labour MP Richard Burden is asking as he protests Hagee's upcoming appearance at Birmingham Symphony Hall.

"It’s hard to understand why Raed Salah is banned from the UK while Pastor Hagee is welcomed despite his repulsive and bigoted views," said Burden. "I also wonder whether Symphony Hall knows what Pastor Hagee will be saying when he uses their premises."

He went on, "Many people might believe that he is entitled to freedom of speech, however offensive his opinions. But there is a difference between accepting his right to speak and actively helping him by providing premises.”

Symphony Hall's general manager said they are well aware of Hagee's controversial past, but don't plan on canceling the event.

Officials at the Home Office, meanwhile, wouldn't remark on Hagee personally, although did say they "will seek to exclude an individual if she considers that his or her presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good."

Whether they feel Hagee harms the public good remains to be seen, although it should be pretty clear that he does...

  1. Now if we could just keep him from re-entering this country.

  2. I hope the UK bans him! He's a dangerous right wing religious bigot who has blamed virtually every natural disaster on gays and his views on women is absolutely disgusting.

  3. Eventually they'll let no one in. Extreme form of heckler's veto. Also, Hagee really isn't well known.

  4. I second and third @Ralph and @Robert: I hope they don't let him into Britain, and I hope they don't let him back to the US. Drop him off in Uganda, or wherever they deposited bin Laden.

Or just wait for the plane to run out of fuel and let it slowly decline into the sunset...

  5. Why have you called Michael Savage a racist and a homophobe? He's neigther of these things. I happen to listen to his radio show several times a week and he's never uddered anything that could possibly be considered racist or anti-gay! This statement you've made is a flat out lie.

  6. Uddered? That would be Maggie Gallagher.

You could ban a lot of people except for all the ones that are UK residents and citizens--they get to say whatever they want.

  7. Britains are spineless hypocrites. That nonsensical "public good" standard means that whomever is the persona non gratis flavor of the month for some demagogue gets the boot. When a thin-skinned pervert gets to set policy on whose views are acceptable, there is no credible freedom of expression. Following their colonist violence history, UK should be lobbing bombs at ... the UK, to unseat the tyrants running the joint. Don't worry, USA will help ... or ... er ... not. Scripture calls it "the power ofthe dog".

  8. This is not a church, this is a hate group. Westboro Baptist Church says they hate the Gay-Community. But, they also hate African Americans, Dr. & Mrs. King, Canada, Sweden, the Fire Department of N.Y., victims of 911, other Christian churches, the pope, Judaism, America, our American troops and the list goes on and on.
This so-called “church” spreads its hate through picketing in our streets, provoking attacks, with abusive language and flag desecration, attempting to create a confrontation. This is not about protesting, freedom, or God. They are in it for the money and the press; this is a family law firm. They are not a "church." It is a scam. They go after any thing that can get them in the news.
The city of Topeka, the state of Kansas and the U.S. at large, its citizens and their churches, schools and events are all held hostage by this "hate group” and always at the tax payer's expense.

  9. @BROTIMTIM The decision is made by the democraticly elected members of the UK parliament. Its our country, our rules, deal with it. Keep your trash, we dont want it.
