Cameroon Sends Three Men to Prison for Five Years for Gay Sex

Three men have been sent to prison for five years in Cameroon after being caught having sex, AFP reports:

CameroonThe Ekounou court sentenced the three on Tuesday to five years imprisonment and a fine, the heaviest sentence provided by Cameroonian law, which bans homosexuality, Michel Togue told AFP. Two of the convicted men were present for the ruling but the third was sentenced in absentia, said Togue, who added he had appealed the decision.

"It's a bad ruling because it is a blatant violation of the law," the lawyer said, citing procedural technicalities when the guilty verdict was handed down.

He also accused the judge of peppering the hearing with homophobic innuendos. The three were allegedly caught in the act in a vehicle in July.

In September, five human rights groups called on the president of Cameroon, Paul Biya, to end detentions, arrests and harassment of its citizens based on real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity.

  1. Africa lives up to being the "dark continent" when it comes to LGBT human rights abuses. I hope Western countries step up and warn these African leaders to stop these heinous abuses or be subject to loss of financial aid packages. One can only hope!

  2. Brilliant: send them to an all-male prison.

  3. HadenoughBS: And Europe lived up to being the "dark continent" when it came to imposing such views on brown people around the world for hundreds of years.

  4. Maybe slavery wasn't such a bad idea after all since the most homophobic countries were the ones that used to fetch us our slippers...

  6. @Redball: agreed. Every time Andy posts one of these stories, there are knee-jerk "let's cut off all aid!" responses. What people don't seem to realize is that U.S. aid is mere scraps to African countries.

China spends more building infrastructure (bridges, roads, mines) in Africa---to serve China's own purposes, to be sure---than the entire world gives Africa in aid. U.S. farm subsidies exceed the total combined GDP of Sub-Saharan countries. And on and on. These countries have no reason to fear, respect, or really care about the U.S. or Europe. Colonialism wasn't exactly a walk in the park for them. The more we push, the more they'll pull away and find other sponsors (or, ideally, develop effective governance and fair legal systems). U.S. foreign aid is the lowest (relative to GNP) of all rich countries and usually comes with stern conditions attached---and a lot has to be repaid. It's not free money by any stretch. How long would you like being told what to do by your "wiser" overlords?

I certainly think that these flagrant human rights abuses are disgusting and immoral. But we don't exactly have a lot of moral authority over African countries. Sodomy was illegal here too until quite recently, historically speaking. And we have plenty of culturally backward people in positions of power as well.

  7. These men truly have my compassion. Were I similarly ostracized, it's difficult to imagine the personal impact. Their having sex did not harm anybody.

Homophobic society (which is virtually all world culture) is wholly and unconsciously ignorant. They think in terms of correcting belligerent adult behavior. In truth however, such "moral" society regularly mutilates the self image of innocent LBGT children, whose resulting lives in adulthood are an inner hell of self hate.

We need to understand that self dignity and a moral society are mutually exclusive. On the most basic level, you have to choose one and let the other go. I choose self dignity, and I urge all LGBT activists to do likewise. Abandon the creation of a new (pro-gay) morality; that is the seed of nonacceptance and for the sake of all people who are different it should be abandoned.

  8. Thanks, Redball. You try to make sense but it doesn't matter. There are some White Gays who couldn't care less what happens to Black Gays in Africa. They only care about finding information that reaffirms their racism and feelings of supremacy. They hate Black people and that includes Black Gay people. But that's ok...we aint crazy about their dorky lookin' asses either.

  9. Gay sex is illegal in our country and all those who go against the law in a country of laws like ours are sanctioned.
