CA Church Man Beats Other Families' Children As A Favor

Spare_the_rod4More news from the Family Values crowd: In Chino Hills, CA, there is a pparently a church which counts among its members a man to whom the other parishioners outsource their family beatings. This practice came to light after a high school faculty member noticed bruises on the legs of a 15-year-old student and asked where they came from. According to the AP, the boy was beat because his parents suspected him of smoking:

[The boys' parents] asked Paul Kim, 39, to discipline their son after finding a lighter in his possession, dropping the boy off at Kim's Chino Hills home with permission for the beating, San Bernardino County sheriff's spokesperson Cindy Bachmann said Saturday.

Kim hit the child with a metal pole about a dozen times, causing severe bruising on his legs, according to Bachmann. The pole was about an inch in diameter, investigators said.

... Investigators believe Kim has been used in this way by other families in the congregation, and asked for victims and witnesses to come forward.

Authorities have so far declined to name Mr. Kim's church or release the name of the victim's parents. They are, however, reportedly considering whether the boy's father ought to be charged with wrongdoing.

  1. This is sick! Christers are always screaming to protect the children yet they are the people children often need the most protection from.

  2. Seriously? Just considering charging the father who dropped his kid off at some man's house to be beaten?

One thing is certain . . . that kid must be grateful that he is being brought up in a home environment that can boast the unique relationship of One-man and One-woman.

Could you imagine the hell he would have had to endure in a home with two loving fathers or two loving mothers?

    What a nightmare!!

  3. Will it turn out this guy didn't just physically abuse these kids? As an abuse survivor I know my abuser "enjoyed" it. It was kind of a fetish for him. It never went beyond beatings but he was high off of it for hours if not the entire day after the beatings.

  4. "Wrongdoing"? Seriously? How about child abuse and attempted murder? Makes you wonder what else he's done to children over the years. He needs to be locked up.

  6. The parents should be (and probably will be) charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
The guy who did the beating will be charged with same (probably) plus battery, and maybe more charges, too.

    ?WTF?

The parents, the other families, kim, & the church, the church leadership etc should all be charged

  10. An eye for an eye, asswipes? The parents and the christo-sadist all need to be beaten with metal poles. Hey, tough love.

  11. How 'bout we drop off Rick, Josh, Tank and that other guy for their beatings?

Oh ya, except that they'd like it.

  12. I grew up right next to Chino Hills and I can tell you that the whole suburban area in that region is basically ruled by the Christian upper and middle class people who sit on all the school boards, on all the PTAs, and all the community groups. These are mostly wealthy, educated Asian immigrants who were helped in relocating to America through extensive church contacts and it's not surprising that this sort of behavior is not only condoned, but communicated to one another through the religious channels.

This area is wealthy and the schools are great, but the social views are generally pretty conservative and almost backwards for such an affluent and modern town. I remember when a student at one of the high schools started a GSA and teachers were actually stopping him in the halls and asking him why he wanted to start a "sex club". No surprises here, at all.

  13. How much do you want to bet this guy gets a stiffy while he's doing it? Never mind. It's a sucker bet. You KNOW he does!

It'd be a hell of lot easier to respect "faith" if so many of them weren't nuts.

  14. Marcus you're description of Chico Hills is as creepy as the details of any inner city slum. These people sound insufferable, encamped here to support our most insufferable tendencies. It must be that they are frightened, which is highly possible since nearly all Asian imigrants have come from nations and areas repleat with violence, instability and with their very own hobgoblin itself - intolerance.
The young Asian man or woman coming out to their parents in such a fearful neighborhood is likely to be facing far more than normal disapproval.

  15. protect us from these holier than thou christians. the man, father and the leaders of the church should be charged with child abuse. this is the third major story of child abuse by these right wing christians. speaks highly of their family values.

  16. Isn't a beating by a third party assault? In some communities police won't arrest a parent for beating their own kids...but by a stranger? If a loan shark hires someone else to do the beatings...no one is arrested?
In my religion, it is bad to beat up kids...so I have an excuse to hire Mr Kim to beat up the parents. Of course, the DA won't charge me (freedom of religion, right?)

  18. Even from a secular perspective there is a problem with creating a general taboo against any kind of corporal punishment of children. The non-corporal forms of discipline all call for more intelligence and a lot more patience than most parents have. They are superior methods, yes. But would they be practiced? My guess is that if we were to seriously ban and stigmatize physical discipline most parents would just become overly permissive and basically give up on discipline altogether. This is why even though I don't believe corporal punishment is the ideal way to discipline I wouldn't want to see it elimninated completely.

Hoewever it seems to me that in this case, the parents went overboard in allowing their child to be hit with a metal rod. And shouldn't the parents be doing the disciplining THEMSELVES?

  20. @Mary
How did I know, prior to reading your full response, that you would find some way to justify the beating of children? So you believe that because some parents are not intelligent enough or don't have the time to learn how to apply non-violent discipline methods, we should keep the stick in the corner so we can grab it quickly---but only when absolutely necessary. Perhaps you can tell us just what actions of children should be deemed as an acceptable reason for the big "kids" to grab a weapon and beat up the little kids. IMO, if parents are too busy or too stupid to learn how to discipline children then they are too busy or to stupid to have them. Beating children will never solve the ills of our society, it will only perpetuate the problem of abused children becoming the abuser of the children of the future.

  21. Since the perp is clearly a literal interpreter of the Bible his defense has two viable options: reduced intellectual capacity and insanity.

  22. "So you believe that because some parents are not intelligent enough or don't have the time to learn how to apply non-violent discipline methods, we should keep the stick in the corner so we can grab it quickly---but only when absolutely necessary"

    ..... basically,....yes

"IMO, if parents are too busy or too stupid to learn how to discipline children then they are too busy or to stupid to have them"

I agree totally. But unfortunately, these less than intelligent and/or patient people are going to have kids regardless of what you or I think.

"Beating children will never solve the ills of our society"

I agree. But I don't think anyone ever claimed it would. What it does do in most cases is stop those kids from getting worse. In previous eras more parents used physical discipline. And I'm not aware that the society suffered more pathologies as a result of this.

It could even be argued that a prohibition on all physical discipline would not prevent parents from abusing their children because they would simply let all discipline go until they "broke down" and then went overboard with hitting. Although I admit that this is speculation only.

  23. mary

it is stupid parents who find no other recourse to discipline except beating

it is far easier and more effective to remove privileges

for example with young children = no desserts, no tv, etc

teenagers = take away phones, video games, computer, car keys, etc
