Chicago Protest Canceled After All

Picture 9As of yesterday morning, the Gay Liberation Network still intended to protest Cardinal Francis George, of the Chicago Archdiocese, this afternoon for comparing LGBT rights activists to the KKK, even though the Cardinal had apologized for his remarks. (Read his apology here.) No longer.

Yesterday afternoon, the Network issued a statement which read, in part:

Even though the Gay Liberation Network finds the "apology" of Francis George woefully inadequate, we nevertheless agree to call off the protest scheduled for January 8 (tomorrow, Sunday) at Holy Name Cathedral. While taking this action, we highlight our sharp disagreement with some LGBT groups which previously backed the protest and now bubble over with undeserved praise for Cardinal George.

You can read the rest of the Network's statement here.

  1. Maybe he's geographically challenged and thinks the United States only consists of two Coasts. Maybe he's been busy looking for articles promoting traitors to America. Or maybe it's just that he caters to only atheists.

For whatever reason, Gary Towel has neglected any mention that the Church that started the fight for gays to have equal marriage rights in mainstream churches closed today.

  2. Jeff -- I do not know any Gary Towels. This is Brandon, and Im the weekend editor. If you have a story tip to submit, please send it along. brandonkthorp at gmail dot com. Thanks.

  3. Does anyone know much about the Gay Liberation Network? All I was able to discern from its site is that whoever is doing the design is likely legally blind.

The anti-G8 stance is also a bit odd, but whatever.

  4. The Catholic Church, from Pope Benedict XVI to Cardinal Francis George need to be held accoundtable for the hatred and discrimination of LGBT. Cancelling today's planned protest should not have occurred. Does an apology wipe away the wrong Cardinal George's comments caused. I think not!

  5. Jeff, your comment was unnecessarily rude. You need to learn how humans interact with one another.

  6. @Jeff: Chicago isn't exactly on one of the "two coasts" ...

  8. Jeez, this was quite the outrageous statement to be made by one so exalted as a cardinal in the RC church! I mean, not only should gays be massively offended (somehow marching one day out of a decade in front of a RC church is tantamount to lynching people because of the color of their skin!), but I would think that blacks would be even more outraged that this Cardinal is equating the lynching of blacks (for no reason other than racial hatred) with the innocuous event of a gay pride parade marching past a church. OUTRAGEOUS whichever way you cut it. Glad to hear he had a moment to reflect and decided he was wrong. I for one, appreciate him doing that.

  9. Why would the protest be cancelled? The Cardinal, like the rest of the offensive haters, makes a bigoted comment and back pedals when it is clear that the group maligned isn't going to take it laying down. His sincerity is questionable so why not go through with the protest?
