Mitt Romney Will Give Commencement Speech At Liberty University

RomneyRally

Mitt Romney's crusade to win over social conservatives will take him to anti-gay activist Jerry Falwell Jr's Liberty University.

CNN reports that the Republican presidential candidate plans to deliver the Christian school's commencement speech in June, just as John McCain did in 2007, Ronald Reagan did in 1980 and George HW Bush did in 1990.

How much right wing propaganda will Romney inject into his remarks? Probably a lot.

  1. Just got through posting on the Rosa Parks/Obama photo. Now I read this. Even with conflicts and disappointments, the choice is so very clear.

  7. "let's all take a moment to remember the victims of 9/11 who, as the late Christian Jerry Falwell declared, were killed not just by radical Islam, but due to the gays and single mothers of new york"

    literally.

    pathetic.

  11. I'm only 20, so it doesn't matter what I think about voting in Novemeber, but I do read a lot. I suppose this board and for that matter this story is not the appropriate place to ask a question, but I am curious why gay people on Towerload always attack each other when they don't think exactly the same way politically? It doesn't come across as a community caring about each other, and respecting diversity, but instead kind of intolerant, spiteful and hateful. I attend the University of AZ, and both my gay and straight friends are leaning a lot more conservative than not. We worry much more about getting jobs after college than who can get married right now. I guess it's a matter of priorities.

  12. @Travis

take a look at any straight website/ blog etc

HUMANS ,thanks to the anonimity of the internet , trash talk each other when they disagree

Heck ALL HUMANS trash talk to each other face to face though we try to more civil about it than we do on the internet

Gays on towleroad do not trash talk each other more than any humans on any blog

In the end we need a couple more million years of evolution for it to change. We are just overglorified monkeys flinging our poo at each other

  13. The man has no shame. The ironically named Liberty U, which is anything but free-thinking and not really academic, is the bottom of the barrel.

  14. Brim, I'm not familiar with where Liberty U stands relative to the status of other Christian colleges, but Falwell's daughter Jeannie Savas is a graduate of this college and currently a professor of Surgery in at a medical school in Virginia.

  15. Well, graduating from LU is kind of like being the prettiest whore in the whorehouse. Frankly I don't know how Christian colleges and universities get accredited. My dad profs at one and I meet some of his interns that are accepted through the college. 0% critical thinking skills, ability to analyze, etc. Part of the reason for that, I think, is having little to no intellectual opposition - 'Iron sharpens iron' as the saying goes.

And LU stifles free speech. There was a big to-do in the later half of the 2000's over the university having a Democratic club. And debates get shut down frequently. If the cornerstone of academics and a liberal arts education is freedom of thought, then the absence of freedom of thought results in poor academics.

It would be interesting to know if Falwell's daughter continued doing graduate work elsewhere before teaching surgery in VA.

  16. Mary - Thanks ever so much for being an LU apologist.

Let's just say that none of the UC System, the Ivy League, nor the Seven Sisters is in any danger of being academically overtaken by LU. Ever.

  17. TRAVIS - Lord have mercy. Assuming you are for real:

You're only 20, so it doesnt matter what you think about voting? WTF does that mean?

Does respecting diversity, in your mind, include tolerating oppression? Tolerating points of view from religious zealots who see me as an abomination? Who play the god card and tell me I'm going to hell, alongside unrepentant mass murderers and child molesters and rapists?

Does concern for jobs - not unique to conservatives, and the fact that conservatives have done nothing but obstruct the current administration notwithstanding - mean one cannot care about other issues?

Does pointing fingers at people who care about equality distract enough attention away from social onservative candidates who actually haven't let one opportunity slip to demonize gay people?

    Really?

You're only 20, Travis? Time to grow up.

  18. TJ, You're probably going to get angry with me, but I'll say it anyway: I think you're being unfair to Travis. 20 is very young and he does have a lot to learn. But telling someone to "grow up" is condescending. Travis is just beginning to see that all political/cultural communities are made up of flesh and blood human beings who don't agree on all matters. Should you chastize him for not knowing what some people twice his age still don't know? He seems to be an ally of the gay community, so wouldn't it be logical to act nice to him?

And by pointing out that he is "only" 20 he seems to be aware of the limits of his knowledge. Modesty like this in someone so young is impressive.

Read on, Travis! You'll get there. You could be one of the leaders of tomorrow.

  19. Yes, MARY, 20 is young, but a 20 year-old university student is not to be babied.

And if you really want me to condescend, how's this: go back in the kitchen and bake some cookies like a good little woman and leave the discussions to the men. Because being a stay-at-home mommy is what you are supposed to do, and obeying men is your duty. Romney loves you! Play nice, and he'll get you a planet!

  20. Romney is pandering to people that think Tinky Winkie is a role model for gay people because he is purple.

  21. I have a question for Obama and Romney supporters. With our nation bankrupt and in 16 Trillion dollar debt along with multiple never ending wars. With social security, medicare, and medicaid being unsustainable for our seniors. With a massive influx of illegal aliens pouring into a jobless country draining what's left our social services. With growing unpunished corruption by bureaucrats such as David Corzine, Fast and Furious and the Colombian Secret Service scam. With SCOTUS ruling that it is justifiable for police to strip search you for minor offenses (traffic violations). With Totalitarian Police State legislation being passed overwhelmingly...
