NOM's Brian Brown Blasts Cereal Maker General Mills for 'Declaring War on Marriage'

General Mills spit in Brian Brown's Cheerios yesterday when it declared its opposition to Minnesota's anti-gay marriage amendment.

BrownNOM's Brown:

"Marriage as the union of one man and one woman is profoundly in the common good, and it is especially important for children," said Brian Brown, NOM's president. "General Mills makes billions marketing cereal to parents of young children. It has now effectively declared a war on marriage with its own customers when it tells the country that it is opposed to preserving traditional marriage, which is what the Minnesota Marriage Protection Amendment does."

"This will go down as one of the dumbest corporate PR stunts of all time," said Brian Brown. "It's ludicrous for a big corporation to intentionally inject themselves into a divisive social issue like gay marriage. It's particularly dumb for a corporation that makes billions selling cereal to the very people they just opposed."

  8. To paraphrase Mr. Brown, this will go down in history as on of the dumbest instances of failing to get the point in history. Breakfast cereal is in favor of gay marriage, dude. Breakfast cereal! What else do you need? Puppies? Apple pie?

  16. GM is a rather progressive and forward-looking company. In 2005 they reformulated several of their cereals to use whole grain flour rather than bleached-white-death, and most do not contain High Fructose Corn Syrup.

  17. @David Ehrenstein: Snap, Crackle, and Pop are from Kellogg's.

General Mills has Count Chocula, Franken-berry, the Leprechan, the Silly Rabbit, the Pillsbury Dough-Boy, Betty Crocker, Green Giant, the Hamburger Helper helping hand, and all those hot athletes on Wheaties boxes.

Nope, nothing gay about any of those characters.

  18. There has to be a video of Brian soliciting gay sex or having a wide stance in a men's room. Someone needs to find this (probably in a tryst with Marcus Bachmann.)

  19. Should Brian have stopped using technology at this point?

I mean, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon all support same-sex marriage.

One good thing to come out of this: if enough food companies support same-sex marriage it'll help Brian slim down a bit.

P.S. Brian, most parents of 'young children' are in the age group that overwhelmingly supports same-sex marriage. Good luck!

  20. James did you know that Pillsbury Dough-Boy and The Jolly Green Giant run a "clothing optional" resort in Palm Springs?

  21. What's really ludicrous is claiming victim status because a company treats you as an equal rather than as superior to other people. If General Mills treats Jewish and Christian people with the same respect, does that mean they are "at war" with Christians? If they give men and wonen the same salary, are they "at war" with men?

The majority of Americans now realize that they have friends and family who are gay. But of course Brian knows that those people are not the customer base who eat Cheerios like the "traditional families" with whom they are "at war.". They have no appetite after drinking the blood of Christian babies.

  22. Have any of you clicked through to the original post the quotes in this article come from? Read the comments of other NOM supporters. It's quite depressing, angering, and actually made me feel sick. I understand why these people hate us so much, but it still shocks and saddens me.

  23. Lucky for General Mills, BB is there to help them with corporate decision making...because obviously they can't do that correctly without him. Where was the world before BB got involved in all our lives...personal & corporate??

  25. Christian, it's easy to get depressed when reading those comment pages. Just remember that the NOM echo chamber amplifies the sentiments of a small group of people. This is true of all comments pages, including this one.
