Watch Eric Holder's Keynote Speech Before the LGBT Bar Association: VIDEO

HolderLGBTBar

Last night I wrote about how Attorney General Eric Holder delivered the keynote address at the LGBT Bar Association's Lavender Law Conference.

It was there that Holder, by far the most pro-equality attorney general in American history, told the gathered lawyers that they have a "solemn responsibility" to fight discrimination.

Well now you can watch C-SPAN video of that speech AFTER THE JUMP.

  1. Oh, I am SO relieved that Eric Holder supports LGBT equality.

That TOTALLY makes up for the fact that he supports the indefinite detention and killing of American citizens without trial or even judicial oversight, and thinks it's perfectly ok to spy on US citizens without a warrant.

Yea, that Holder guy sure is a gem!

  2. Yes, Jack, and if he didn't what would the Republicans say is the reason he and his boss are unqualified to protect Americans from terrorists? They're both Muslims.

  3. So that excuses him tearing the Constitution to shreds? The Obama administration has been just as authoritarian and hostile to civil liberties as the Bush administration was.

"What the Republicans" would say is not an excuse, hell it's not even a cop-out. It's utter nonsense.

Holder is a piece of crap.

  4. "It's utter nonsense."
Maybe American politics is utter nonsense.

"Holder is a piece of crap."

Then that makes Bush and Cheyney and Romney and Ryan a pile of crap.

  5. No argument there. They are all crap. And supporting LGBT equality doesn't make him not crap. He can take his porn 'stache and hit the bricks.

  6. This man is fantastically boring. His voice is a sedative. I'm not even sure what he said.

But it would be nice if Eric would have stated he would ALSO refuse to defend the other half of DOMA, which is similarly unconstitutional.

  7. 1. Holder is not, apparently, against all of DOMA, just part of it, in line with Obama's bigoted claim that state's rights trump our civil right to marry.

    2. Holder does defend Obama's 'right' to murder American citizens on a whim. Raw Story 03 06 2012 "The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is strongly objecting" to holders contention that Obama has the right to "kill U.S. citizens anywhere in the world without judicial review."

"Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU’s national Security Project, said that Holder’s explanation “raises profound legal and moral questions,” and poses a grave threat to American liberties should a future president decide to seize upon the precedent for more nefarious purposes."

And, according to Jonathan Turley, in an article in Foreign Policy also on 03 06 2012, Holder's justification for Obama's kill list "served as a retroactive justification for the slaying of American-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki last September by a drone strike in northeastern Yemen, as well as the targeted killings of at least two other Americans during Obama's term.

What's even more extraordinary is that this claim, which would be viewed by the Framers of the U.S. Constitution as the very definition of authoritarian power, was met not with outcry but muted applause.

Where due process once resided, Holder offered only an assurance that the president would kill citizens with care. While that certainly relieved any concern that Obama, or his successor, would hunt citizens for sport, Holder offered no assurances on how this power would be used in the future beyond the now all-too-familiar "trust us" approach to civil liberties of this administration. ..."

One of Obama's victims was the 16 year old son of Anwar al-Awlaki, a high school student from Denver, murdered by one of Obama's drones in Yemen. Aside from a few US Citizens Obama's war policies and interference in the affairs of other nations have murdered thousands of GIs and uncounted tens of thousands of civilians in Libya, Palestine, Yemen, Bahrain, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
