News: Natural Gas, Exhuming, Another Bush, Manbar

90s stars we still know and love today.

ArafatDeceased Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's remains will be exhumed on Tuesday as officials investigate yet another rumor that the Israelis poisoned him. Great, just what the region needs: the ghost of Arafat hanging over a cease-fire.

Celebrities react to Larry Hagman's death.

A Chicago-area Catholic Church has offered to confirm Lennon Cihak, the Minnesota teenager denied confirmation at his own church after he supported marriage equality on Facebook.

Early reviews for Les Misérables are sensational.

Bush: The Next Generation: "George Prescott Bush, the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and the nephew of former Texas governor and ex-President George W. Bush, has filed preliminary paperwork to run for office in the Lone Star state in 2014. That leaves the new Bush poised to become a key face in the next generation of Republican politicians."

Umm... "Does being fat make you more jolly?"

SpringfieldexplosionA natural gas explosion damaged 42 buildings, including a strip club, in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Critics are not being kind to Liz & Dick starring Lindsay Lohan. Tim Goodman from The Hollywood Reporter called it "spectacularly bad."

The LA Times profiles Dave Roberts, the first Democrat elected to the San Diego Board of Supervisors in over a decade. "He's also gay and married to a retired Air Force master sergeant. The two are adoptive parents to five former foster children, ages 4 to 17, who call them Daddy Dave and Daddy Wally."

From Monika Johnson's article "Making progressivism last": "Creating progressive infrastructure will ultimately yield decisions that change our economy and society. For example, I was struck recently when a relative turned down a lucrative deal because the organization was enacting anti-gay policies in conducting business. In making this decision, he took a stand for what he believed in and created a ripple effect that will influence that business’s chances of success."

Michael O’Kane, the editor of the Irish Daily Star, has resigned for his role in the publication of the nude Kate Middleton pictures.

HarrymuralA mural of a shirtless Prince Harry has become a huge attraction for London's Manbar.

The New York Times magazine spent some time with Scott Fahlman, inventor of the emoticon. "In 1982, as a young professor at Carnegie Mellon University, he realized the need for a symbol to temper the bickering that plagued online forums. The Internet was just a baby then, and yet already flame wars raged. Fahlman decided that a smiley face could be useful as a 'joke marker' (as he called it) to take the sting out of mocking statements or pranks."

Indiana's Purdue University has big plans for World AIDS Day.

Have Richard III's remains finally been found?

  1. "Great, just what the region needs: the ghost of Arafat hanging over a cease-fire."

Whoa, that's one mean comment! Since when should the truth be relegated to an uninvited inconvenient spectre?!

  2. It's fairly widely known that Arafat died of AIDS.

That mural and the article's quotations about Prince Harry are insipid. It looks like his armpits are holding dead rats. PR much?

  3. OK, so Arafat died of AIDS. Many do not want to face that simple fact. Hence, we have conspiracy theories galore about Israeli involvement. I can only hope that this autopsy absolves the Israelis and is taken as authoritative. If the results are problematic, however, we could easily see the cease fire end amidst great Palestinian anger.

Do you have a link for the Chicago-area church willing to confirm Cihak? The link you give is the HufPo account of the original story, this time including a statement from the priest that the marriage equality advocacy was *not* the reason for the denial of confirmation!? I tracked down the appropriate article by searching on HufPo, but the link was wrong (it was the one you gave above). All I got to read was the very beginning of the correct post. Andrew, you need to get your nomenclature right. "Catholic Church" normally refers to the "Roman Catholic Church". From the article, however, the church involved is the "Old Catholic Church". Without more information, that term is, unfortunately, ambiguous.

    Hail Purdue!

  4. This is so stupid!
Why should an Irishman give up his career for the stuck up "honor" of a lazy, useless and good-4-nuthin' family which only benefited from his nation's century long misery"! They were just embarrassed that a royal veejay is not really gilded as we meager mortals always have expected! :-P

  5. I saw Les Miz today and it is indeed teriffic. MASSIVE production. Everyone's good in it, and it should be a Number One Holiday Crowd-Pleaser. It's over 2 1/2 hours long and my ass didn't twitch once.

  6. Good old Springfield...a daycare center and strip club on the same block. I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt, but it would be no great loss if Springfield and Hartford both burned to the ground. You want to see the decline of America, just visit most of our small cities all over the country. Most died economically decades ago, and infrastructure is in major decay. In fact, infrastructure everywhere in the country needs major overhaul. Even fly into NY JFK for example and it's embarrassing. And the flooding from Sandy was as bad as it was due to a large degree by poorly maintained and dated infrastructure. Amazing the major under water subway tunnels had no flood gates, and lack of or crumbling seawalls.

  9. Everyone already knows, or should have guessed, that Arafat was slipped a "happy pill". That's why he had the big smile and waved like a fool at the crowds as he was carted off to die. The same goes for the Jewish guy that had the stroke.

  10. Bitter much Ratbastard? Always negative.

  11. Prince Harry WISHES he had a body like that ! Just looking at Harry's real body you can see he is NOT actually required to do all the physical activities required of everyone else in the armed forces.

  13. She may very well do that, Kiwi. Her supporting turn as Fantine is utterly heartbreaking. And when she finished singing "I Dreamed a Dream" the whole theater burst into applause.

  14. That's a very seductive photo of Arafat. My underwear's around my ankles and I don't even know how they got there!

  15. Clueless much Betty? Ratbatard's rad lamentation of the urban decay is poetic! He might be ill-tempered like me sometimes but he is eloquent and well informed. U have to give him that much, dear!

  16. Was the news about Arafat included just so that the snippy editorial comment could be made?

It is so sad to see how a leading gay blog gets co-opted into the received message that if the Palestinians weren't so darn pesky, the Israelis (with American support) wouldn't have to blast them into an earlier century and imprison two million overwhelmingly innocent civilians in a cruel, relentless siege.

Nothing personal, but Belonsky is a sloppy journalist, or rather blogger. Maybe just reblog from other gay blogs on weekend to spare the regular readers.

Also, on a less serious note, the plural of Israeli is not written with an apostrophe.

Israeli's = possessive of the singular Israeli

    Israelis = plural of Israeli
