Romney Speaks About Loss, Blames It on Obama Wooing People with 'Gifts and Initiatives'

Mitt Romney conducted a "spin and grin" call (desribed that way by someone who dialed in) today and spoke for the first time about his election loss, the NYT reports:

Concession_romneyIn a conference call on Wednesday afternoon with his national finance committee, Mr. Romney said that the president had followed the “old playbook” of wooing specific interest groups — “especially the African-American community, the Hispanic community and young people,” Mr. Romney explained — with targeted gifts and initiatives.

“In each case they were very generous in what they gave to those groups,” Mr. Romney said.

“With regards to the young people, for instance, a forgiveness of college loan interest, was a big gift,” he said. “Free contraceptives were very big with young college-aged women. And then, finally, Obamacare also made a difference for them, because as you know, anybody now 26 years of age and younger was now going to be part of their parents’ plan, and that was a big gift to young people. They turned out in large numbers, a larger share in this election even than in 2008...”

  1. No, you lost because your party ran on a campaign that was a complete insult to anyone with a functioning brain and a compassionate heart.

you were anti-woman. you were anti-gay. you were anti-poor. you were anti-sick.

you ran the type of platform that appealed only the old angry white men who hated being forced to Integrate, and the braindead women they married who remain slaves in the kitchen.

what did you offer? bigotry. ok. policies that catered to religious beliefs and not scientific of sociologically backed-up facts and empirical evidence.

and xenophobia of the highest order.

you lost because your vision of America actually died in 1955. and thank GOD for that.

  4. And Myth Romney offered to give free gifts to the top 2%-- who don't need free gifts-- and didn't understand that that wouldn't get him enough votes to win. Idiot.

  5. I would love to hear the Republican camp say, "We lost because we didn't listen to the U.S. voters. We kow-towed to the radical right and didn't realize that most citizens are in the center. We let hubris take over the campaign, rather than talking with people humbly and honestly. Next time we will appeal to everyone's intelligence, not their fears."

  6. The "party of personal responsibility" once again blames someone else for its own failure. How responsible!

  7. God forbid he should admit it was his fault and that of his group of angry white men who were his handlers. Once again, he prefers to think that the American public is stupid enough to vote on some perceived "gift" rather than an understanding of the issues. He thinks all a\Americans are stupid and if they see-thru him it must be that they have been bribed. He's is as out-of-touch reality now as he was all thru the campaign.

  8. So if you say things people want to hear, to get elected, Mr Etch-A-Sketch thinks that's bad now?

And of it's the same old thing, why wasn't he prepared to counter it?

    What a lying loser.

  9. I see Mittens is still in deep denial.

It wasn't the messenger (okay, maybe that was a huge part of it, Mr. Wafflehouse), but it was more the MESSAGE. That's what the Republicans will never understand…and that will be their downfall.

  10. Willard, since you will never run for office again would you please release your tax returns. What is in these documents that convinced McCain not to offer you the VP slot ?

  11. Poor Mittster. He didn't get the opportunity to give himself the gift of no taxes on his capital gains. He was hoping and expecting to be able to get by without paying any federal taxes.

  12. I LOVE IT ! I want the Republicans to continue their lies and denials. I want them to continue to be anti-gay, racist, anti-women, anti-health care etc. It will keep them out of office and ensure a victory for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

  13. What a journey. After Mitt's 100% statement, he now reverts back to his 47% position. He said that he is for the 100% was a lie in order to get elected.

  14. I have a good republican friend and she really believes that Democrats are Democrats because we believe we want the government to take care of us. I'm always astounded but the key to understanding them is knowing that this is what they really believe in their hearts, as ass-wrong as it is.

  15. It would be nice if he'd so something like this at least quarterly, to remind me how glad I am he lost.

  17. We need a new law that anyone who puts their money in a foreign country should not be allowed to run for President. If you aren't paying taxes here then why should you be allowed to become President and dictate laws to others ? We need to start a petition.

  20. and this took you a week to say!!! wow!! you are so brilliantly.....stupid If this is your best shot, the Republicans have learned nothing! The election results are CLEAR: the white, rich, Christian, heterosexual male you were pandering to has faded and is fading

    Posted by: Bernie | Nov 14, 2012 7:22:51 PM

  21. @PLAINTOM, JOHN PATRICK, et al. Romney paid no taxes from 1999-2007. The details are here:

  22. His public persona is a sociopath incapable of self reflection or empathy. I feel sorry for his family.

    Posted by: Polyboy | Nov 14, 2012 7:42:35 PM

  23. No, Mitt you lost because us women do not feel like being treated as third-class citizens (female dogs have more rights and access to health services than we do in certain states), and that derogatory comments, opinions and all over statements that you have made in the past 8 years in regard to anyone who is not a straight-white-Christian male, were quite clear that you are not OUR president, but rather our persecutor.

  24. wow -
"I can't help that I lost. I was going to give specific things to the very wealthy in favor of them sending me money...which worked out quite well, I might add...but...I don't understand why we don't get to have a vote for each dollar we own...rather than just one vote per person. There is no way my VERY VERY specialized SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP can possibly come up with as many votes as the poor, blacks, Latinos, women, gays, youth all combined. I mean...these people have no money...why should they get to win?"

  25. NOT THAT DARN WOOING! It's a very wholesome thing that not one Mormon is wooable! Check the vote in Utah, Idaho and Arizona (clearly no wooing or cooing or Romney booing went on there)!
