Colorado Teen Files for Ballot Proposal to Amend Constitution Allowing Gays to Marry

Colorado teen Zofie Mandelski has filed a ballot proposal to amend Colorado's constitution, the Denver Post reports:

ColoradoShe filed the proposal Monday with the nonpartisan Legislative Council, the first of many steps in getting an issue on the ballot .

"I do personally support gay marriage, but my parents don't," Mandelski said, "but they are supporting me in this because they do think the issue should be voted on."

The proposal reads: "Be it enacted by the voters of the State of Colorado: Article II Section 31 of the Constitution of the State of Colorado is amended to read: A union of one man and one woman, one man and one man, and one woman and woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state."

Colorado voters in 2006 approved a constitutional amendment that basically outlawed same-sex couples from marrying. It passed approved 55 percent to 45 percent.

The first hearing on the proposal is scheduled for February 11.

  1. This actually has a chance of succeeding so I hope we can all get together and help this campaign.

Colorado has really swung around from the right wing crazies of just a few years ago. It's good to see Colorado people are now educating themselves and not blindly following along with the lies on Fox news.

  2. I agree with the intention of this proposal, obviously, but I don't think ANY law should ever be worded to specify the irrelevant category of gender. If this law were to pass, then intersexed people or others who may be outside of conventional concepts of "man" or "woman" may have to prove they are one or the other to be trested as others are.
I'd feel the same if a law banning interracisl marriage were smended to read that a marriage is between "a black and a black spouse or a white and a white spouse or a black and a white spouse." They shouldn't have to categorize anyone's sex or race in any law, ever.
