Michigan Governor Evades Marriage Equality Question

RickSnyderOn the same day that legislation was introduced to repeal Michigan's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, Governor Rick Snyder evaded a question on the issue from the AP:

The first-term Republican governor says the measure should go through the normal legislative process.

Snyder says as governor he’s obligated to respect the state Constitution. But he says if voters decided to change the provision on gay marriage, he’d respect that as well.

Asked about his personal position on the issue, Snyder says he hasn’t gotten involved because he wants to focus on “jobs and kids.”

A poll from earlier this month shows Michigan voters' support for same-sex marriage has skyrocketed to 56.8 percent. In 2004, only 24 percent of voters supported marriage equality when it was constitutionally banned.

  1. Actually, the 2004 vote only had 56% support for the gay marriage ban. 44% of Michiganians voted against the ban.

  7. Doesn't matter what he thinks, in Michigan it's in the voter's hands to repeal the constitutional ban and replace it with marriage equality. Doesn't matter what the Governor or legislature want.

  9. I live in Michigan and proudly voted in 2004 to keep marriage between one man and one woman, and am relieved that it is written in our constitution. A repeal of that would take FOREVER, since Michigan is technically a Republican state. Want gay marriage? Go somewhere where it's allowed. Hell, go cross the border to Sodom & Gomorrah...err...Canada. Adam and Steve fighting over who gets to wear the wedding dress has no place here.

  10. "a repeal of that would take FOREVER"
No, I believe under Michigan law a repeal is really easy, just get some signatures on a petition and over 50% to vote for it. Just as easy as it was to pass. And the polls are looking good and should only get better by 2014. I predict marriage equality in Michigan by the end of 2014!

  11. The mere thought of equating Canada and Canadians with Sodom and Gomorrah just makes me smile. Clearly "Ziemba" has never actually been to Canada. :)

  12. Warren and friends are forcing Snyder to defend himself to his ultra right wing funders and declare himself one way or the other. Trying to erode his position even more for the faceoff between him and Schauer in 2014.

  13. On his birthday today, may the spirit of Walt Whitman shine into the hearts of Illinois lawmakers to pass marriage equality legislation!

  14. A Michiganian isn't a thing. You must be takinga cue from that wretched warted up witch granholm. The word you're looking for is Michigander. That's like calling a black person the n-word.
