President Obama Gets Big Cheer for Mention of Gay Rights in Berlin: VIDEO

Berlin_obama

President Obama is in Berlin today and gave a major speech at the Brandenburg Gate. Though the speech was wide-ranging in what it covered, he received huge cheers at the mention of gay and lesbian rights.

Said Obama:

I'd suggest that peace with justice begins with the example we set here at home, for we know from our own histories that intolerance breeds injustice.  Whether it's based on race, or religion, gender or sexual orientation, we are stronger when all our people -- no matter who they are or what they look like -- are granted opportunity, and when our wives and our daughters have the same opportunities as our husbands and our sons.  (Applause.)

When we respect the faiths practiced in our churches and synagogues, our mosques and our temples, we're more secure.  When we welcome the immigrant with his talents or her dreams, we are renewed.  (Applause.)  When we stand up for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters and treat their love and their rights equally under the law, we defend our own liberty as well.  We are more free when all people can pursue their own happiness.  (Applause.)  And as long as walls exist in our hearts to separate us from those who don’t look like us, or think like us, or worship as we do, then we're going to have to work harder, together, to bring those walls of division down.

I've cued it up to the portion transcribed above, AFTER THE JUMP...

  2. A great moment unfortunately ruined by a Plexiglas wall. 'Bring down this wall!'

  3. Good speech. Berlin is a gay haven, so many lgbt people, also in the audience I suppose.

  4. He needs to stick these gay and lesbian references into a Cairo speech. Europe is a gay-friendly audience.

  5. While as a broad generalization, western Europe is relatively more gay-friendly than other spots in the world, there are still many areas of Europe that need this reminder.

  6. TALKING about treating our love and rights "equally under the law" is not better when he does it in any other country than when he TALKS about it back home. For the unequivocal FACT is that HE is continuing to let Pentagon bigots treat gays in the military as Second Class Citizens in ways that have NOTHING to do with DOMA. And, yes, there's his continuing refusal to keep his promise to use HIS power under the law to order federal contractors not to discriminate against LGBTs the way FDR protected blacks.

[And, YES, such an order WOULD do a great deal of good, and there is no reason to believe the next Repug president would reverse it because FDR's, Truman's, or Clinton's pro job equality orders weren't. Even if it was reversed, there's no excuse for not protecting as many as he can for as long as possible.]

  7. You mean western Europe, Will? Coz we all know most of eastern Europe is as backwards as any other developing part of the world.

Great speech though! I would love him to say something like this while visiting Uganda. The horror!!

  8. Great speech!

When is President Obama to return to the States? I know his trip overseas ends today, SCOTUS releases decisions Monday's and Thursday's...do you think they'd wait until Monday based on the President's travels?

  9. He MUST speak out before Russia,Africa and these other underdeveloped/uncivilized 'countries' decide to EXTERMINATE their GLBT citizens.
Time for some actual leadership and actions that match his words.

  10. Great speech, but like many others said, he should make these comments in Cairo, or Moscow, or on his upcoming trip to Africa.

Sadly he'll never do that though. He only says it in the most gay-friendly places.

  11. So a speech only counts in the country in which it was made? Hurray for Germany. The POTUS comments are not made in a vacuum, particularly when made outside of the US.

I also guess the UN speech in late 2011 doesn't count because it wasn't "outside the US" although most nations were represented.

Mark Bromley, chair of the Council for Global Equality, …"The President's remarks [before] the UN General Assembly, where he called for the world to 'stand up for the rights of gays and lesbians everywhere,' were historic. Never before has a sitting U.S. President spoken so clearly about LGBT rights in a formal address to the full General Assembly. It shows how far we have come."

  12. "...and when our wives and our daughters have the same opportunities as our husbands and our sons."

He should set the example by paying women in his administration the same wages as men. He also paid women less than men during his campaigns.
