Texas Governor Rick Perry Says He Won't Seek Reelection

Texas governor Rick Perry says he won't seek reelection, the AP reports:

Dadt_perryA staunch Christian conservative, proven job-creator and fierce defender of states' rights, Perry has been in office nearly 13 years, making him the nation's longest-sitting current governor.

The 63-year-old ruled out another try for the White House in 2016, but Perry's decision not to run again for his current post likely clears the way for longtime Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to make a serious run at the Republican gubernatorial nomination in the March primary.

Perry is the longest-serving governor of the Lone Star State.

Said Perry: "I remain excited about the future and the challenges ahead, but the time has come to pass on the mantle of leadership. Today I am announcing I will not seek re-election as governor of Texas. I will spend the next 18 months working to create more jobs, opportunity and innovation. I will actively lead this great state."

  1. At 63, he might have a few good years of playing pump-and-dump left.

  5. The only problem is that, since it's Texas, the next wingnut to come along is always worse than the last.

  7. As I understand it, the majority of the jobs brought to Texas are low-level hourly positions that do not provide health care. Jobs are great, but if there is no way to move up the social ladder and improve the lives of subsequent generations like our baby boomer parents, what's the point? Seems like he is just perpetuating the cycle of poverty. Also, I hear he has gay hookups, and I had always hoped his hypocrisy would be exposed. That's the only disappointment I have with his departure.

  8. Perry the Platypus would make a better Governor than Rick Perry the doofenschmertz. His job creations kept him on par with Mississippi for the greatest amount of low-wage-earning jobs...nothing substantial. The energy job creations were done in spite of Perry. Big Liar, bigger Doof.

  11. It may seem like a collective sigh of relief, but it only means that we now have a ridiculous amount of work to do in order to keep that xenophobe fascist Abbott out of the governor's seat. He's a tea partier's wet dream and we can't afford his kind of shoot first, ask questions later politics.

Just a few recent gems from his fb page:

Confirmed voter fraud aided President Obama's campaign in 2008. This is why I fight for strong Voter ID laws.
End Voter Fraud - Greg Abbott
    shar.es
Voter fraud damages the integrity of our electoral system and lessens all Americans’ right to vote as granted by the Constitution.

    - Oh really now. So let's be sure to
gerrymander every district to keep any
    non-white voters from accessing
    the ballot.

The NSA’s secret collection of Americans’ phone records reminds us that our civil liberties are eroding more under the Obama Administration than any other time in our history. http://bit.ly/11t80ek

    - Yeah, right. Our civil liberties have
been eroding ever since day one. You
just have more people blowing the
whistle on wiretaps since Nixon and
now it's the calling card for every
politico looking for a campaign flare
    to fire into the sky.

Better sleep with one eye open while this one has his sights set on the next step up in public office.

  12. woodroad34d: Oh please, don't insult Perry the Platypus putting him in the same sentence with Rick Perry. Perry the Platypus is cool, Rick Perry not (no matter how many Brokeback Mountain campaign videos he made)

  13. I was looking forward to watching Wendy Davis beat him. I'm less sure of how she'll do with someone who doesn't have his baggage -- since the state is still more red than it is purple.

  15. Why no post about the multiple street assaults and muggings that took place after pink pride in S.F.? There's a particularly brutal CCTV video all over the internet showing a woman being robbed, and brutally kicked in the head and knocked unconscious. google it and you'll find it. And she wasn't the only person attacked.
