Portland Trail Blazers Become First NBA Team to Support Marriage Equality

Trail BlazersLate last week, the Portland Trail Blazers lived up to its name, becoming the first NBA team to formally endorse a marriage equality campaign. When asked Friday about Oregon United For Freedom's November 2014 ballot initiative that would overturn the state's 2004 constitutional ban on same-sex marriages, the team had this to say:

"The Portland Trail Blazers are in support of the Freedom to Marry and Religious Protection ballot initiative. We do so as believers in individual choice as a fundamental right of all people."

The Portland Mercury, the paper that broke the story, says that the Trail Blazers have also become the first team from the "big four" professional leagues (basketball, baseball, football, hockey) to formally endorse a marriage equality ballot measure.

The team's statement followed similar endorsements by Portland's Timbers and Thorns soccer teams.

  1. Will they hire Jason Collins now?...

  2. The MLS teams actually endorsed first. Executives (Robert Kraft, Mark Cuban, John Mara and Steve Tisch) have come out in support of marriage equality but the Portland Timbers and Blazers are the first major pro teams to do so.

It's a big deal in that the face, the brand of these organizations is now connected to marriage equality...a political issue. A team willingly making a political statement whereas in the past it's something that would be avoided by sports teams at all costs.

Ankerich, Portland already has 15 players (maximum number) under contract. Jason Collins' isn't going to be signed. It is what it is. Let's hope someday soon, a professional athlete will come out at the height of his career, as active.

  4. Wise for them to only extend their support to the LGB community and not the Trans community. Most of the men on the team, and most men in general, are creeped out by Trans people. We should not be aligning ourselves with genderless freaks! Litper and I are much clearer on the matter in the post about the Dutch diplomat attacked in Russia. We cannot let those Trans freakazoids sit at our table.
