Terry McAuliffe Calls Out Ken Cuccinelli's Rabid Homophobia in Last Days of Virginia Governor Race

Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli's abysmal and hateful position on gay people and gay rights were brought up by opponent Terry McAuliffe in a debate last week at Virginia Tech, the Washington Blade reports:

McAuliffe pointed out his Republican rival once described gay Virginians as “soulless human beings” in response to a question during an Oct. 24 debate at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg that Roanoke television station WDBJ sponsored.

“Who talks like that,” McAuliffe said. “There’s somebody in this audience who might be gay or has a friend who’s gay. You cannot grow and diversify our economy with this mean-spirited language.”

McAuliffe, who has publicly backed marriage rights for same-sex couples alongside the two other Democratic candidates for statewide office, further sought to differentiate himself from Cuccinelli during a campaign rally at Herndon Middle School on Monday at which former President Clinton spoke. U.S. Sen. Mark Warner; Congressman Gerry Connolly and state Del. Charniele Herring (D-Alexandria), who chairs the Democratic Party of Virginia, also addressed those who attended the event.

“We must be a state where gay Virginians are treated equally,” McAuliffe said.

Recent polls show McAuliffe leading by a 51-39 percent margin.

  1. Scratching his head and without a clue. The photograph sums up ALL Republicans position exactly!

  2. The head scratching is Terry's response to whatever gay-obsessed drivel is seeping out of creepy Ken's mouth.

  3. I had to Google his name and, yup, self-loathing closet case...

  6. Cuccinelli is down 24 points with women and down heavily with minority groups of all stripes. Virginia isn't such a conservative state that only winning the white conservative vote will be enough to get him through. Republicans still seem not to understand that. Oh well.

  7. Some Republicans are voting for Sarvis because they know that Cucch is regressive on social issues and would rather vote for him than to vote Democratic Party.

  8. The Poll cited in the TowleRoad story is from the Washington Post. Other reliable polls show only 4 or 7 points difference between McCauliffe and Cucch. It will depend ENTIRELY on who turns out to vote -- if any of you have friends or relatives in Virginia who will vote for McCauliffe, do whatever you can do to get them to vote on Tuesday. If Cucch gets elected, it will be (a bigger) disaster for gay people in Virginia than it is now. Just google his name ("Cuccinelli") and the word "gay" and you'll see his views.

  9. T McA would be a much better candidate if he were not so attached to the Clinton scandals and apron-strings. He can rise to Gov. of VA, but otherwise, his political career is over. As with other races against nutty Tea Party nominees, a weak Democratic candidate is saved by the shear barminess of their opponents. This has happened in several races now.

  10. In fact two latest polls have it basically even in Virginia, so things may be tightening in Virginia. What is clear is that Cuccinelli will be destroyed in the women vote. That's McAuliffe's meal ticket, and getting enough votes out of Northern Virginia and Richmond. As Middleoftheroader put it, it ultimately comes down to turnout.

  11. I love McAuliffe's question: "Who talks like that?" And Cuccinelli? He'd be nowhere without his looks, just like Paul Ryan.

  12. If you know ANYONE in Virginia, make sure they VOTE on Tuesday. And NOT for Cuccinelli. This thing is WAY too close and he is NOT a gay people OR to women. Recent polls are MUCH closer than the WaPo numbers cited. Get people to the polls! We do NOT need another Tea Party Crazy Person in Office. Please Vote for McAuliffe!
