President Obama: 'One Party in One House of Congress Should Not Stand in the Way' of ENDA

President Obama released a statement following the passage this afternoon of ENDA in the U.S. Senate:

B_obamaFor more than two centuries, the story of our nation has been the story of more citizens realizing the rights and freedoms that are our birthright as Americans. Today, a bipartisan majority in the Senate took another important step in this journey by passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would help end the injustice of our fellow Americans being denied a job or fired just because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Just as no one in the United States can lose their job simply because of their race, gender, religion or a disability, no one should ever lose their job simply because of who they are or who they love.

Today’s victory is a tribute to all those who fought for this progress ever since a similar bill was introduced after the Stonewall riots more than three decades ago. In particular, I thank Majority Leader Reid, Chairman Harkin, Senators Merkley and Collins for their leadership, and Senator Kirk for speaking so eloquently in support of this legislation. Now it’s up to the House of Representatives. This bill has the overwhelming support of the American people, including a majority of Republican voters, as well as many corporations, small businesses and faith communities. They recognize that our country will be more just and more prosperous when we harness the God-given talents of every individual.

One party in one house of Congress should not stand in the way of millions of Americans who want to go to work each day and simply be judged by the job they do. Now is the time to end this kind of discrimination in the workplace, not enable it. I urge the House Republican leadership to bring this bill to the floor for a vote and send it to my desk so I can sign it into law. On that day, our nation will take another historic step toward fulfilling the founding ideals that define us as Americans.

  1. We proud gay men at GayPatriot think ENDA is a stupid and useless thing, because the only discrimination against gay people in the USA is from liberals who don't accept gay conservatives.

  4. The time has come for America to stop heading down the divisive path it's been headed. We need to treat our citizens with respect and equality. If we continue down a divisive path the only winner will be the man doing the dividing because the rest of us have been so distracted from the real issues plaguing America.

Politics has no business getting in the way of progress. Let's get America back on track. We can all work together as equals, for the good of the nation, the way the founders of our nation intended. The only supporters of inequality have something to gain from it's maintenance. We are watching you Republican party bring yourself back from the fringe, America is waiting for us to work together.

  5. Thanks Mr. President. It was a nice epitaph for the bill which will never reach your desk. Le sigh.

  6. @GAYPATRIOT I have a new hero for you: Jo Jordan, the lesbian legislator in Hawaii who voted against the gay marriage bill because she was so moved by all the bigots who testified about how gay marriage is against God's law.

  7. I seem to recall Barney Frank canning this bill when he had majorities in both houses. Timing is everything in politics. The cynic would say it's easy to support a bill that's not going anywhere.

  8. The action now shifts to Hawaii. Friday is the last reading. I don't understand why they need to read it three times as if they have reading disability. People say second reading is the most important and the third reading is just a formality. That means it will very likely pass on Friday.

  10. this won't help.
the republicans in congress hate the president so much that they vote against everything he stands up for.

  12. Do you honestly think the Republicans are going to do anything to further Obama's agenda after years of lies regarding Obamacare? In case you haven't been paying attention, the entire healthcare system in this country, including doctors, hospitals and the insurance industry, is being destroyed by the Obamacare lunacy. I have read the bill, and the very worst is yet to come. This lunatic says Obamacare insurance policies are better. That is the biggest joke of all. I can tell you after scanning the 20,000 pages of regulations, which the press has yet to comment on, clearly shows that the restrictions in these policies are unprecedented. Here are a few examples. Got diabetes? Is your medication not working? You can only get one med per class per month! That means if your doctor gives you one med and it doesn't work, you will have to come out of pocket to get another RX filled. I personally know someone who is on 5 blood pressure meds. You can only get one med per class per month paid by Obamacare insurance! The rest comes out of pocket. Food allergies, diabetes, over weight? They can demand a stool sample to determine what you are eating. If they find foods that you are not supposed to ingest, you are given one change to change your diet. If the 2nd stool sample shows that you have eaten anything not on the diet approved by your doctor, all claims related to your diagnosis code will be rejected for payment. But, you still have to carry insurance. If you drop it, you get fined. Let's say you become critically ill and your doctor needs to run several tests to determine your illness. Only the tests authorized under the diagnosis code will be paid. Overweight? Your doctor is required to put you on a diet. He tell you based on a chart how many days you have to lose the extra pounds. You have one chance. Don't lose the weight? Then all claims related to obesity will not be paid. I could write all night and not list all of the insanity I have found in the Obamacare regulations. A revolt is coming when the public finds out, the likes we haven't seen since the civil war. It is past time for the LGBT community to realize that Obama has one mission in mind. He is here to destroy the USA. When you look at all of his actions and policies, there is no other conclusion that can be reached by anyone who is sane.

  13. And the regulation you will love, your doctor must ask you how many people you are having sex with and you must provide him with all of their names! Is anyone getting the picture here?

  14. Michael,

    Cite the regulations or retract.

  15. Yeah, not really gonna believe a word you say with citations there Michael.

  16. Shame on this president. It's time the US ended the privileging of religious thought, religious practice, and religious people, and started making everyone else equal to them.

Haven't they done enough? How many more people have to die from withheld medical care, being cast out and despised, or from outright murder?

    End religious privilege.
