Houston Mayor Annise Parker: Phil Robertson is a 'Redneck Wingnut' With 'Completely Irrelevant' Views

Annise ParkerIn an interview with Lone Star Q, openly gay Houston mayor Annise Parker was asked to give her thoughts on neighboring Louisianan Phil Robertson and the controversy surrounding his anti-gay comments and suspension from A&E's hit show Duck Dynasty

Quipped Parker:

"I have never watched 'Duck Dynasty,' so I don't think about it much at all," Parker responded. "I've been a gay community activist since the mid-70s. It was a very different time. We were fighting to keep people out of jails and mental hospitals. What some redneck wingnut has to say about the GLBT community is completely irrelevant."

  1. How sweet is it that we have openly gay elected officials? She is 100% correct.

  5. Well, in a way it is relevant because it speaks to the ignorance prevalent in the south. I think it's an important distinction and although most of us already knew helps to see it and hear it straight from the duck's mouth.

  7. She has seen enough of them in Texas that she is more or less desensitized.

  11. she's right but politically unwise to keep pouring gasoline on this conflagration. the shake out of this mess is not going to be in our favor.

i am an evil heretic troll of course to dissent.

  12. WOW...Mad respect to her! FINALLY an LGBT who speaks up for us!

    Posted by: Mark | Dec 22, 2013 8:02:51 PM

  13. Considering how apologetic most LGBT public figures have been in this situation, this is VERY admirable of her!

    Posted by: Lenny | Dec 22, 2013 8:03:21 PM

  14. Wait why aren't you all supporting her on her twitter page and social media? she's getting grilled and LGBT are NOWHERE to be found. Why are we so weak when it comes to standing united?

Posted by: Two Dads | Dec 22, 2013 8:04:04 PM

  15. I agree, more LGBT need to be galvanized and support those that stand up for us. The crazy conservatives are such a vocal minority but VOCAL.

  16. There's now a campaign to impeach her for this comment. HOW IRONIC IS THAT? They want to impeach her for her freedom of speech.

Anyhow, please express your support outside of just LGBT blogosphere and let our collective perspective be shared in the face of bigotry.

  17. So why isn't she being removed from office for calling a another person a stupid redneck? I guess up poo pushing cock smokers are finally getting what we deserve.

  18. Phil describes himself as white trash, one of his sons has described his family as rednecks.

    Posted by: Kim | Dec 22, 2013 9:34:34 PM

  19. Of course there are consequences if she is employed by a TV network. But she is not. You can vote for her or not vote for her. You can even petition to impeach her. She is a free agent. Probably she knew that before speaking out. Those who supported her probably will still support her. Rick Santorum has said far worse things about gay people. So what.
No one is denying the duck guy his "free speech". Others also have the right to criticize him. People are just laughing at his stupidity for getting into trouble with his boss. Apparently a lot of people still can't see the difference.

  20. I like her style.

  21. Show your support for Annise on social media. Freedom of speech is a two way street! and she deserves to express hers,
Conservatives are only for free speech when it suits their needs.

  22. She's getting hammered on social media. Show your support by commenting on facebook and twitter!

    Posted by: Winston | Dec 23, 2013 1:23:59 AM

  23. She is getting hammered along with Wilson Cruz who has stood up to the bigots. I have been going to task on social media defending him and encouraging him on his page because they are out in full force with the Bible in one hand and their version of the Constitution in the other.

  24. Yes his viewpoints are outdated, but I wonder how she would appreciate being called a bull dyke by someone that disagrees with her policies. She shouldn't lower herself by name calling. Stay intelligent, not a name calling child.

  25. The spirits of Ann Richards and Molly Ivins lives on in Ms. Parker. Love em' or hate em', Texas and New Jersey politics are always interesting.
