Oklahoma GOP Lawmaker Proposes Banning All Marriages to Keep Gay Marriage Out: VIDEO

Oklahoma Rep. Mike Turner is proposing a bill that would prevent the state from recognizing any marriages as a response to a federal judge's ruling striking down the state's ban earlier this month.

KWTV reports:

Turner says it's an attempt to keep same-sex marriage illegal in Oklahoma while satisfying the U.S. Constitution. Critics are calling it a political stunt while supporters say it's what Oklahomans want. "[My constituents are] willing to have that discussion about whether marriage needs to be regulated by the state at all," Turner said.

Other conservative lawmakers feel the same way, according to Turner.

"Would it be realistic for the State of Oklahoma to say, ‘We're not going to do marriage period,'" asked News 9's Michael Konopasek.

"That would definitely be a realistic opportunity, and it's something that would be part of the discussion," Turner answered.

  3. YES! Ban that marriage right. We look forward to Oklahoma taking the first stand against ALL marriage! Of course, you know your residents will leave Oklahoma, right? Again, what do you care! Banning all marriage is the best way to stop all gay couples from getting married in Oklahoma. Go ahead - cut your nose off. We dare you, you pompous fools.

  5. The idea actually makes a lot of sense, and it's what Libertarians have been saying for a long time now. Get government out of the marriage business and instead just have government legislate contracts, which are legal documents.

If you decide to get married, then it's up to your faith community or cultural or ethnic community to "marry you off" as it used to be done. If you belong to the Episcopal Church, they can feel free to marry two women, and they do. If you belong to a Southern Baptist church, they can feel free to marry only one man with one woman.

Let's take this whole cultural fight over marriage out of the hands of the politicians and let's bring it back to where it belongs...families, friends, and faith communities.

  6. The whole "don't recognize any marriages" thing is a smokescreen because the advocates of that position know perfectly well that it will never happen. It's just an attempt to appear fair-minded while doing nothing to advance equality.

As for this clown, wow, talk about a scorched-earth policy. Some would rather poison the entire well and die of thirst than let us have one sip of it. But, they are doomed to fail, and their spastic death throes do nothing but advertise their madness to the entire world.

  15. We Quakers do not believe that marriage is the domain of man, either governments or church officials.

Historically many Quakers did not get married. Some Quakers do get married under the state, but do so for purely legal protection.

When a couple does get married, they say their vows with the Meeting acting only as witnesses, with no one of alleged authority officitaing, proclaiming, or blessing what they themselves have blessed.

Intrestingly, Quakers, unlike most other religions, have (per quota) rarely divorce.

So the idea of banning marriage, while stupid as it would violate the First amendment on Freedom of Religion for those who feel that their marriage does require human interference, is not so bad an idea as it does promote an inadvertent equality I am sure this idiot does not intend.

The issue though is not really about equal marriage. Gay marriage has only became an issues because the United States government has failed to honor gay relationships at all, voiding their will, and every legal precaution taken to protect their property and see that it goes to their partner, nullifying their wills and dispensing their money and property to the heterosexual vultures that descended when a gay relative passed.

So, by all means, ban marriage altogether, but understand this . . . WE WILL HAVE EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW.

The handwriting is on the wall. If you can't read it, then find a gay person who can read it for you.

  18. I think his point is no government recognized wedding, but I'll bet dollars to doughnuts they're going to let churches perform the weddings and they will be recognized.

  19. No one is talking about "banning" marriages. The discussion is about the role of the state in sanctioning marriages. I personally believe that the best solution is to completely privatize marriage and allow consenting adults to write contracts according to their agreed upon terms. The only role for the government is to apply standard contract law and have the courts enforce these contracts accordingly.

  23. Oklahoma.... The state that last summer decided to stop ALL applications for spousal benefits in their National Guard just so they wouldn't have to process a couple of apps from same sex couples when the Feds decided to recognize same sex marriages everywhere.

I wonder where he got his idea here?

  24. Where did Mike Turner's parents go wrong? Did they not ever tell him, "Think before you open your mouth!"?

  25. Is channel 9 the local Faux affiliate? @ 0:37 into the story, their info graphic shows Turner as (D) Edmond. Typical Faux News tactic to mislabel the real crazies as Democrats instead of GOP.
