Actor Theo James Hopes We Have a Gay Action Hero Soon

Theo James, co-star of the new film Divergent, spoke in an interview with The Advocate about the rising role of female action stars, such as Tris of Divergent and Katniss from The Hunger Games, as well as the bisexual allegory of Divergent. When asked whether or not he thinks we'll see an LGBT action star in the near future, he took a moment to think the question over before responding:

It’s very hard to tell because today there are great shows like Looking, poignant pieces of work that revolve around a central cast of characters that happen to be gay. But I remember when Queer as Folk came out and thinking, Things are changing. Maybe there will be more [shows like this]. And then suddenly there was a drought. Hopefully the day [we have a gay action hero] isn’t far away.

  1. Oh, how to preserve my dignity while drinking that bathwater?

  2. Don't worry Steve. It will probably end up as a group project.

  3. Not to read too much into his answer, but the guy has quite the knowledge of gay television series. Just sayin'.

  4. Captain Jack Harkness!

  5. Mr. Pamuk cannot POSSIBLY be gay. He slept with Lady Mary! We all saw it!

    Mind you:
    1) It killed him
    2) He's British
    3) He's of Greek origin
    4) He's an actor
    5) He's hot as Hades

Then there's EC's astute observation, which I also made on reading his comments.

Now I have got to go find me some pictures of him to draw on like Courtney Love, though WAY less bitterly, and WAY MORE positively!

We cannot conclude anything from anything, but next case please!

    I thought the same thing

  7. Although of course one doesn't have to be "just gay" to be divergent. Or [fully] "bisexual."

The spectrum is so broad these days, we probably need to clear up that grey area, maybe with a term like "MSMer."

That's a mouthful. I vote we make it "mesmerizer." Yep, he's a mesmerizer!

  8. Good for him, but can we please retire the phrase "happens to be gay" forever? The characters on Looking don't "happen to be gay" -- they are gay, and it's a major part of their lives.

There's a vague hint of self-loathing in the "happens to be gay" phrase, as if the speaker is downplaying gayness to the point of irrelevance. It is not irrelevant, and we all know it.

  9. @James:

"There's a vague hint of self-loathing in the "happens to be gay" phrase, as if the speaker is downplaying gayness to the point of irrelevance. It is not irrelevant, and we all know it."

May I politely disagree, James? We know that true equality has been reached when the sexual orientation of characters in television programmes / plays / novels etc. are completely unremarkable. At that point LGBT people will know that they are fully equally accepted and not 'ghettoized'

  10. "the rising role of female action stars"

Katniss, yes. But there's also The Host, The Mortal Instruments, and Beautiful Creatures, 3 spectacular flops.

And Divergent looks like a terrible film that's going to be a distant memory once the cat ladies all see it on opening weekend.

  11. Saw Divergent last night and its surprisingly good despite its serious lack of male nudity. Theo James = delish!

  13. Remember him on "Downton Abbey?" He died in Mary's bed.
