Brunei Delays Anti-Gay 'Death By Stoning' Law For Now

Brunei_mapThe small southeast Asian country of Brunei has delayed implementation of its new Islamic criminal codes which would punish homosexuality by lethal stoning.

The country’s Islamic Legal Unit has blamed the delay on “unavoidable circumstances” possibly related to Brueni Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s recent trip to Singapore. In addition to stoning, the new laws would also instate public floggings and severing of limbs as criminal punishments.

Earlier this week, a secret, high-dollar LGBT donor conference planned at The Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles moved locations after learning that Sultan Bolkiah owned the hotel.

  1. This is a very sad situation. It practically goes without saying that what Brunei is doing is outrageous and criminal, and any pressure that can be brought to change the situation and publicize it should be attempted.

Unfortunately a good friend and ally of the gay community, for many years, is getting caught in the crossfire of this class of cultures. We're taking it out on a friend.

The Beverly Hills Hotel has been a supportive ally of the gay community for many years. A high percentage of employees are gay, and the management has had an equality position for many years. They have welcomed gay meetings and events, and advertise themselves as great place for same-sex marriage ceremonies.

The Sultan owns so many billions of dollars worth of property around the world that BHH is a mere speck. I'm afraid that he won’t even notice nor care. The good people at this hotel are paying the price.

The staff at this hotel is superb, friendly and welcoming of everyone.

“We do not tolerate any form of discrimination of any kind. We are also against any law in any other country around the world that punishes people for their religious beliefs, ethnicity, race or sexual orientation. The laws and policies that govern how we run our hotel have nothing to do with the laws that exist in any other country outside of the United States. We do not tolerate any form of discrimination and strongly value people and cultural diversity amongst our guests and employees.”

  2. "New" laws... right from the Dark Ages? I thought that, in this day of Twitter feeds and Facebook, of "Selfies" and blogs, that all this... open dialog, all this transparency was moving civilization forward to a global homogeny.

Then we look at Russia, Africa, India and now Brunei.

Why are gays so easy to hate? Oh, wait, that's right, because a very small group of very all armed people have some form of dogmatic, cloistered negative opinion on gays that they are forcing down everyones throat at gunpoint.

So, Sultan Bolkiah, you can give good face in the US where our tourist dollars are filling your coffers back home, but back home YOU are the one supporting and implementing these new laws. I don't see a disconnect here, other than you should have been run out of the US years ago.

  3. @ JONATHAN :
    Seriously ?

If we compare the consequences of this draconian law with the commercial interests of one Hotel, don't you see where the greater harm lies. I'm sure all the staff are friendly and supportive of GLBT but that's not the issue.

The Hotel should be only the beginning of direct action; all interests of the Sultan of Brunei should now be highlighted for action, whether boycotts, adverse publicity or condemnation.
We must denounce the rise of Sharia Law everywhere - or else it will continue with its evil hold, just as evangelism has in Uganda and African backwaters.

  4. Once owned by a billionaire closet queen named Merv Griffin, The Beverly Hills Hotel now belongs to murderous homophobe the Sultan of Brunai.

Tent and fumigate it before selling it to someone new -- preferably openly gay.

  5. The Sultan of Brunei own The Dorchester Collection, which includes not only The Dorchester in London, but the Hotel Bel-Air as well at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Add in the Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris, the Hotel
Eden in Rome... check out http://www.dorchestercollection.com/

All of these hotels have Facebook pages and Twitter accounts, and I've even seen messages of support on the Dorchester Collection Facebook page. I believe this issue should be kept alive on their social media outlets at the very least; among people who pay that much for hotels, the last thing they're looking for is controversy.

  6. So le me get this right (I almost said straiht :>). The ruler of Brunei has parked his tens of billions of dollars of oil money, money he got by selling oil to the West, including America, in dozens of properties all over the world. We are supposed to boycott the most gay-friendly one of them, the hotel that has always accepted gay people fully as employees and guests and advertises that it welcomes same sex marriags? Ohhh-kaaaaaay.

  7. (NOTE: The story incorrectly states that the Beverly Hills Hotel is in Los Angeles; it is in the City of Beverly Hills.)

As someone who grew up in Beverly Hills and is active in the city's community affairs, I believe the support of the Beverly Hills Hotel's management, although commendable, is irrelevant to the greater issue: the fact that profits from this business help support an absolute monarch who would violate the fundamental human rights of his subjects. The only way to demonstrate that the owner of the iconic hotel, the city's Historic Landmark No. 1, does not reflect the values of the community whose name it bears is to boycott it. City tax dollars should not be spent there. Private individuals and businesses should not book rooms and events there until the Sultan repudiates the new law.

  8. Good luck trying to use the threat of a boycott to change a multi-billionaire Muslim's religious beliefs.
