KramerRoadFrank Bruni snarks at Jo Becker book as he salutes Larry Kramer. "Right now there’s an impassioned conversation about proper credit for the huge successes of the marriage-equality movement. It stems from the publication of a book by my Times colleague Jo Becker, 'Forcing the Spring,' which focuses narrowly on a few key figures from the fight to overturn a 2008 California referendum prohibiting same-sex marriage. In giving them such primacy, 'Forcing the Spring' has raised hackles, and it suggests a new corollary to an old adage. Perhaps history isn’t simply written by the victors. Perhaps it’s written by the publicity-conscious participants with the foresight to glue journalists to their sides."

  1. What!? The pope is anti-abortion!? Somebody grab me my clutching pearls!

  2. I accept it is a routine part of nature, but that killer whale video is disturbing. There's also always something disturbing to me with people gawking over something like that. I couldn't help but hope in the fight, one of the killer whales would knock over one of the boats of spectators and have an easier meal.

  3. Well, they're called killer whales for a reason. Theirs is a wild life, and cauliflower isn't going to cut it at mealtime.

I'm amazed that NY condom law still exists. Is it 1914? Maybe 1954? (Or 1984?)

  4. Like I said, I accept that is how nature works. I'm not sure that part bothered me as much as the gawking. At the end of the day, you witnessed and animal trying desperately and failing to protect its newborn from a pod of killer whales. It's nature, but it's brutal and awful and not a spectator sport.

  5. Good to see the Pope continue to speak up for the weakest and most disadvantaged in society...the unborn. We a LGBT persons ought to be standing with him in standing up for the rights of the unborn, as we know what it is like to be disadvantaged and on the receiving end of those who hold the power. It's no fun having no voice in one's future. The unborn have no voice, so we must be the voice of these smallest and weakest members of the human race.

  7. Wow. Debbie Harry is looking good for any age. But, girrrrrrrrrrrrrl, those overly arched eye brows are scary....

  8. @Beezer: actually, believe it or not, my comment was not in response to your first one, though it definitely seems like it is. I
been reading the news round-up and got a call and so had been on the page for several minutes before you post.

I didn't even watch the video, because I can't stomach such things. Your description validates my decision; it sounds awful, and I'm sorry you had to see it. Too bad the whales aren't better at getting the Japanese and North Euorpean hunting boats that continue to slaughter them.

  9. Who gets credit for marriage in CA? Let's just say that the people first out of the gate with their own self-promoting messages will not in time be able to take hold of the message. Documentarians will slowly but surely get a clear picture of events.

  11. That's a damned fine looking cauliflower. All he needs now is one of tose 100 lb wheels of cheese.

  12. This might not have been obvious from the linked article, but the boat full of spectators who were watching the killer whale eat the calf were on a commercial whale watching boat. So they were not just satisfying their bloodlust. The whole purpose of being on the boat was to to whale watch, and the incident with the orcas was completely unexpected.

    Debbie Harry still rocks!

Paul Simon - still crazy after all these years.
