Family Suspects Gay Bashing in Brutal Death of Teen in Sao Paulo, Brazil

The family of a 17-year-old whose body was found near a bridge less than a mile from the stadium where the World Cup will be hosted in downtown Sao Paulo is disputing police reports that call the teen's death a suicide, saying the details are far too gruesome for that to be the case.

KaiqueFamily members and friends believe that Kaique Augusto Batista dos Santos, who was found badly bruised all over his body and with his teeth pulled and injuries from an iron rod in his leg, was the victim of a gay bashing.

They said they believe gangs are responsible. Said Kaique's sister Tayna:

“These thugs enjoy beating and torturing with their bare hands and they are please to take the lives of homosexuals. He had bruises to his head and was probably kicked to death.”

Police told the family that because of overcrowding at the morgue the teen's body was not kept properly and that the state of the corpse was due to decomposition and not a beating. The body was reportedly not kept properly for several days.

Kaique had attended a party at a gay nightclub before he disappeared and his wallet and cell phone were taken. A vigil for the teen is scheduled to take place on Friday evening and more than a thousand people have said they will attend.

São Paulo State Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

GaybrazilflagBig news out of Brazil, where São Paulo State just gave the green light to same-sex marriages.

From Brazilian Law Blog, via JMG:

...São Paulo State (where São Paulo city is located) has updated its registration rules in order to allow the automatic registration of same sex marriages, without the need of a previous court order.

This change has followed, with some delay, a decision from the Brazilian Supreme Court regarding same sex marriage.

Therefore, foreigners who wish to marry same sex partners in Brazil will now be allowed a marriage visa, which is much easier to obtain than the civil union visa for same sex unions, which already existed.

So, who's down for a destination wedding?

São Paulo, Brazil City Council Approves 'Straight Pride Day'

In late June, the Washington Post reported that evangelical leaders in São Paulo were pushing a "Heterosexual Pride Day" after being unable to rid the city of its Gay Pride parade.

Evangelical leaders have suggested the country celebrate a “Heterosexual Pride” day, or “Orgulho Hetero” in Portuguese, by putting the idea up for a vote in the City Council. Carlos Apolinário, the representative spearheading the idea, has previously tried to get the gay pride parade off of Sao Paulo’s well-known Paulista Avenue. If passed, Orgulho Hetero would be celebrated every third Sunday of December.

Yesterday, the City Council approved the proposal, despite the objections of several council members.

Loose translation from Google is HERE.

All the proposal needs now, according to the report, is for the mayor of São Paulo, Gilberto Kassab, to sign it.

More from the AP:

The legislation's author, Carlos Apolinario, said the idea for a Heterosexual Pride Day is "not anti-gay but a protest against the privileges the gay community enjoys."

As an example, he mentioned how Sao Paulo's huge gay pride day parade is held every year on Paulista Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in this city of 20 million people, while the March for Jesus organized by evangelical groups is not allowed on the same avenue.

"I respect gays and I am against any kind of aggression made against them," Apolinario said. "I have no trouble coexisting with gays as long as their behavior is normal."

7 in Brazilian Neo-Nazi Group Arrested for Sao Paulo Gay Pride Attack

Seven members of a neo-Nazi group in Brazil have been arrested for a gay pride bomb attack in Sao Paulo in June which injured 22 people, Agence France Presse reports:

Saopaulo "The four men and three women arrested are members of the 'Hooligan Impact' group suspected of setting off a homemade bomb inside a bar in the city's gay district after a gay pride parade, according to the police's Racial Crimes and Hate Crime unit. Two of the suspects were arrested 10 days ago and five others were picked up on Friday, unit chief Margarette Barreto said. They will be charged with organised crime and with injuring 12 people, police said, adding that only 12 of the 22 injured people came forth to press charges after the bombing. Police tracked down the suspects from a threatening email sent to the parade's organiser. The message led to a neo-Nazi website with photographs of its members that were then compared to pictures taken near the bar that was attacked."

road.jpg POLL: More than half of Californians support ballot measure ban on same-sex marriage. "Fifty-four percent of registered voters would back the measure, according to the survey by The Los Angeles Times and KTLA-TV. Thirty-five percent oppose the proposed measure, which is expected to be on the November ballot. The measure, sponsored by a coalition of groups that favor traditional marriage, would define marriage as 'between a man and a woman,' and effectively overturn a May 15 decision by the California Supreme Court that voided two state laws that forbade recognition of same-sex marriages. The poll, published on Friday, found 52 percent disagreed with that decision while 41 percent agreed."

Leading-man types—Cary Grant, Randolph Scott, and Errol Flynn among them—were grist for the rumor mill, but Raymond had always flown under the radar. Until now. His much-publicized relationship with Natalie Wood helped his straight-arrow image, and he was well liked among the major gossip columnists, especially Hedda Hopper. And with her sonny boy making a name for himself on Perry Mason, Hedda had extra incentive to ensure Raymond's name was kept away from 'those' rumors..."

The mayor said he rejected those requests because it was inappropriate for government to endorse a lifestyle. Today Langford said he will not block the police from issuing the parade permit. That permit is not normally signed by the mayor. Previous mayors have quietly signed the proclamation and allowed the banners. 'I thought I had stated my position very clearly. If I were to sign the permit to put up banners on city right of ways I would be condoning that which I don't condone,' he said. 'To give a proclamation is totally under the purview of the mayor.'"

Murder, Mayhem Reported at Sao Paulo's Massive Gay Pride

Sao Paulo held the world's largest gay pride over the weekend, attracting more than three million people.

Sao_pauloAccording to Reuters, Nelson Matias Pereira, president of the parade told the official news agency Agencia Brasil: "We want people to address machismo, racism and homophobia ... which still exists in Brazil."

Made in Brazil has some excellent photos of the parade, but notes that a murder took place in the Jardins area of the city: "French Gregor Erwan Landovar was stabbed in the abdomen with a knife by a group of three or four young men right after leaving popular gay restaurant Ritz. He was not robbed, meaning it was most likely a hate crime (there is a recent rise in the numbers of hate crimes against gay men in the area). Mr. Landovar died at the hospital, and no suspects have been arrested yet...the newspapers made no reference to the fact that the victim was at a gay restaurant, and that the incident happened on the day of the biggest pride parade in the world."

Made in Brazil also reports that the largest number of thefts and crimes in the history of the parade were reported and said that "it has become a street Carnival with people falling all over the place because of drugs and alcohol abuse."

Reuters says that 900 police were on hand to control the crowds, though that doesn't seem like much considering the massive crowd on hand.

On a more upbeat note, these triplets showed up to keep folks entertained. More shots at QueerClick (linked page sfw but site nsfw).
