For those of us who remember when it was a tiny little coffee shop across the street from its present location at 692 N. Robertson Boulevard, the massive expansion and renovation going on at the Abbey is a sight to see. Already packed all week long, the Abbey is a great example of what can happen to a business when its owner (the tireless and friendly David Cooley) re-invests in his property, supports the community, and serves gigantic frozen apple martinis.
The Abbey recently announced that on June 1st it will host West Hollywood's first gay weddings with Mayor Duran officiating, Margaret Cho hosting, and Pepper Mashay and the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles singing “Amazing Grace”. Now that's not too gay, is it?
There are so many businesses that fail along the uber-gay, uber-fickle strip of Santa Monica Boulevard that it's a pleasure to watch a business actually improve the neighborhood. Below you will find a couple shots I took of the Abbey currently under construction and renderings of what it's quickly becoming — a religious experience. The Sisters may ask to move in soon!
