Like Tinky Winky before him, Spongebob Squarepants is under attack from conservative groups claiming that he is a tool being used to promote homosexuality.
The complaints center around a video featuring a number of children’s TV characters like Bob the Builder and Muppet Show creations. While it is true that Spongebob often holds hands with his best friend Patrick the pink starfish, lives inside a pineapple, and hangs out with a fussy squid who enjoys bubble baths and classical music, Spongebob is also eternally optimistic, generous, and tolerant.
The video features the song “We Are Family” and was produced by Nile Rodgers, who “says it is intended to help teach children the values of co-operation and unity.” Paul Batura, a spokesman for Focus on the Family, calls it “brainwashing.”
If that’s the case, they should have gone after Ernie and Bert a long time ago.
