New Paltz mayor Jason West talks about his decision to marry 25 same-sex couples last year: Our constitution says you can’t discriminate. If I tell them, ‘I can’t marry you simply because of your gender,’ it’s a clear violation of the constitution. I wasn’t going to be complicit in that violation. I didn’t go into [the] office and pick a big national issue to tackle. This was just one issue that I saw I could affect as a mayor.”
