On this day in 1984 author Truman Capote was found dead in the Los Angeles mansion of Joanne Carson, ex-wife of Johnny Carson. Capote, a movie about the writing of his novel In Cold Blood, opens later this year.

The second debate of a proposed amendment to the Massachusetts Constitution that would change gay marriage to civil unions has been set for mid-September. The good news is that it appears some lawmakers are realizing that after over a year of legal same-sex marriage in Massachusetts the world hasn’t ended, the sky hasn’t fallen. Minds are changing. Rep. Anthony Petrucelli has said this week that he won’t vote for the proposal even though he gave his support last year. Petrucelli told Boston’s gay paper Bay Windows that gay marriage has “made strong unions among people who have not had the opportunity until that time to get married.”
