Thursday, Gavin Newsom blasted Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger not only for his plans to veto a bill that would allow same-sex couples equal marriage rights in California, but for issuing a press statement rather than announcing it himself: “I hope he stops hiding behind his press secretary. This is the worst type of politician. [Schwarzenegger's] said [he supports gay marriage] publicly, but couldn't adhere to those comments publicly.”
On the opposite coast, the gay rights group MassEquality criticized a gay married couple's actions after they created an internet site to expose the names of people who signed a petition to put an anti-gay marriage amendment on the Massachusetts ballot: “If they really wanted to be helpful in protecting equal marriage rights, they can show their support by talking to people and sharing stories, not by putting up this silly, mean-spirited Web site.” Tom Lang and Alexander Westerhoff created the site, KnowThyNeighbor.org, to make people better informed. “[Massachusetts] Secretary of State William F. Galvin said there is nothing illegal about posting the names on the Internet.”
