Despite its former British colony status, Hong Kong has said “no” to a request to allow same-sex couples to marry at the British Consulate there: “British law allows for couples, where at least one partner is a British national, to register their partnerships overseas, if the local authorities do not object to us doing so. We consulted the Hong Kong government to ask if there were any objections to the British Consulate-General Hong Kong registering civil partnerships of eligible same-sex couples under this legislation. The (Hong Kong government) has informed us that it does not consider it appropriate to agree to the registration of civil partnerships of same-sex couples at the British Consulate-General Hong Kong at present.”
