BY OCCUPY THE DISCO / RU BHATT
The OXD Mirror is a weekly music column brought to you by the boys of OCCUPY THE DISCO (OXD), a New York City based collective created by three music lovers, Ru Bhatt, Josh Appelbaum, and Tad Haes, who want to share their love for disco, house and dance music with the world.
Mighty Mouse – 'In Front of Our Friends (feat. Monarchy) (Disco Mix)
After remixing Monarchy's 'Disintegration' earlier this year, Mighty Mouse has teamed up with the band once again to create this fantastic feel-good tune. With a guitar riff provided by fellow Du Tonc bandmate Matt Van Schie (of Van She) and amazing vocals provided by Monarchy's Ra Black, the song is incredibly catchy, giving it all the elements of a dancefloor filler.
Franz Ferdinand – 'Right Action (Liv Spencer Remix)'
Franz Ferdinand made quite the splash on the dance scene by teasing Todd Terje-produced buzz tracks earlier this year in anticipation of their LP, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action. The recently resuscitated band continues to be dancefloor friendly with the album's lead single and title track, which is originally produced by Hot Chip's Joe Goddard & Alexis Taylor. House of House's Liv Spencer turns up the groove with this remix by emphasizing the song's funk factor.
Dauwd – 'Heat Division (Tim Goldsworthy Remix)'
UK's Dauwd released 'Heat Division' earlier this year, following up on his 2011 garage-inspired tracks with a more of a techno and house flavor. DFA's Tim Goldsworthy, known for producing epic remixes for the likes of Monarchy, Cut Copy, and Hercules & Love Affair, gives the song a vocal hook that anchors the listener in his dreamy production and also provides a beautiful denouement to the track.

Ariana Grande – 'Baby I (Director's Cut Signature Remix)'
The most promising voice of 2013, Ariana Grande, is supplemented with a classic '90s house treatment by the iconic Frankie Knuckles & Eric Kupper. Released by Knuckle's Def Mix Music (which he runs with David Morales), the signature mix harkens back to the amazing Mariah Carey & Morales collaborations of the '90s. I only wish Grande would take note from Carey's efforts and re-record new vocals with the Def Mix team, hopefully she'll do so for forthcoming remixes.
Disclosure – 'Voices (feat. Sasha Keable) (Wookie Remix)'
I'm so excited to see Disclosure enjoying so much success, it seems that people can't get enough of them. While they continue to release post-album tracks such as 'Apollo' and the Nile Rodgers collaboration, 'Together,' it doesn't mean we've given up on the album, Settle. Given that Disclosure's sound is so heavily rooted in UK garage it makes sense that UK garage legend like Wookie would lend his talent to one of their tracks. On his remix for their album track, 'Voices,' he emphasizes Sasha Keable's vocals and warms up the synths, giving it a lighter feeling.
OCCUPY THE DISCO (OXD) curates and recommends music events to the gay community in NYC—in an effort to move the focus of the nightlife scene beyond the promoter and venue and to the music itself. OXD's goal is to educate, entertain, engage and empower the gay audience to reclaim their ability to question and experience the unknown. The OXD Mirror will serve to showcase tunes that are definitely off-the-beaten-path but rightfully deserve the attention of the gay ear.
This week's post was written and curated by Ru Bhatt. Check out more of his music picks on his podcast, The Ru-Mix and on Made In Brazil.
