Seth Meyers was exasperated by yesterday's episode in which deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein was summoned to the White House in the wake of a New York Times article that reported Rosenstein spoke to Department of Justice colleagues about secretly recording Trump. Other reports later quoted sources in the DOJ who said that Rosenstein was joking. Still, the report gave Trump a pretext for initiating a potential firing of Rosenstein, who oversees the Mueller probe.
Gasped Meyers: “We're on the brink of constitutional crisis because nobody could tell if Rod was joking or not! Can I just make a suggestion to all civil servants in our justice system? Don't make jokes. Jokes are broken now. We made so many jokes about how hilarious it would be if Donald Trump was president that it came true.”
Meyers then turned his attention to the press, which had “no idea what was going on” when Rosenstein was summoned to the White House.
Said Meyers: “This White House is like that episode of Seinfeld where George quits and then tries to go back to work except everyone is George Costanza.”
Meyers pivoted to the Kavanaugh sexual assault allegations, and the media, who praised Trump for exercising restraint in commenting about it.
Said Meyers: “Oh my God you guys, how can you keep falling for this restrained Trump act after three years. You guys are like a monkey watching a magic trick…The media can't help themselves. And hey I get that they can't help themselves to some degree. It can get repetitive for me coming out here every night and telling you the president's a crazy idiot but I'm not gonna just tell you he's cured just for a f**king change of pace.”
