A little update on a story out of Ohio: a federal judge yesterday ruled that high school student Maverick Couch can continue wearing his "Jesus is not a homophobe" t-shirt as the court decides a lawsuit filed by Lambda Legal against the Waynesville School District.
Couch says he originally took off his shirt when his principal asked him to in 2010, but then researched the law — you know, the First Amendment — began actively protesting his school's policy.
After being told he would be suspended for wearing the shirt, Couch took even more action and now the school district, which described the shirt as "sexual in nature," faces what will likely be a very public lawsuit. Funny how that happens when you try to squash free speech.
