Dressing Up

sedaris

road.jpg Time magazine has 10 Questions for David Sedaris on adolescence, odd jobs, keeping a diary, and his family. His latest book, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, is #1 on my summer reading list.

It's not a surprise that the instantly memorable cover was designed by Chip Kidd, the out, pre-eminent book cover designer who talks about finding the image in this interview from The Onion.

Kidd says, "The most tiring—and yet the most rewarding—experiences are when you have to keep redoing [designs] again and again, but what you end up with is actually the best thing. A perfect example of that is something I just did for the new David Sedaris book [Dress Your Family In Corduroy And Denim]. I gave three ideas, and those didn't cut it, and then I gave two more, and I heard nothing, and I started doing photo research for a different job. Luckily, my design gene was secreting, and I saw an image that I thought would be perfect. It was great. Those moments are worth everything. They're some of the most pleasurable aspects of life—when you see something and the scales fall from your eyes, and it's like, "There it was the whole time. It just took until now to find it."

Sedaris also has a tale (not sure if it's excerpted from the book, but I think so) in the June (Jake Gyllenhaal) issue of GQ, which has stolen the crown from Details as the gayest magazine out there.

  1. And, as usual, David is writing occasionally for the New Yorker.

  2. True, Andy, Chip Kidd's work is wonderful. But when I read your entyI was reminded of this observation (http://www.lowculture.com/archives/002048.html) regarding the new Sedaris book cover art and one that bears an uncanny similarity.
