Ann Coulter Calls Al Gore a "Total Fag"

CoulterI think The Bent Post says it well in a recent post describing the interest that surrounds the country's resident Republican witch, Ann Coulter:

"We believe there's a collective addiction to her. And each time she opens her mouth we get another fix, and each time she happily ups the ante and provides a greater high. It doesn't matter if it's a good high and we agree with her, or a bad high and we don't. It's the same rush. But we're feeling optimistic, frankly. Because we think, with her recent unbelievably crazy statements, we may have reached that moment when, after the equivalent of a five day bender of hanging from a sling, slamming Drano and ordering up hooker tranny dwarves, we've caught a glimpse of ourselves in the mirror and thought, 'God, I'm so bored.'"

But she's still out there, feeding the addiction the media has for another sensationalist talking head.

If her recent comments about Bill Clinton's latent homosexuality weren't obnoxious enough, the piehole has spewed another cloud of stale ass juice, this time joking that Al Gore is "a total fag." One can see the giddy thrill she gets as the crowd reacts, laughing. I wonder how they'd react if she referred to Kofi Annan, whom she's asked about in the subsequent clip, using the "n" word? No doubt it wouldn't be tolerated, nor laughed at.

On MSNBC, Coulter called Gore a "total fag," while Matthews said "we'd love to have her back" [media matters]

Ann Coulter needs to be taken to a padded room and put in a straight jacket. She has gone completely nutso!

She's busy digging her own grave...very nicely. With those glasses on she must be pretty darm high...must be sharing Limbaugh's stash.

Someone needs to go on one of these shows and start using derogatory words for Jews, blacks, and Latinos to make a freakin' point....Where are the gay activists????

Posted by: jmg | Jul 28, 2006 3:49:08 PM

It's bad enough that the MSM keeps feeding this beast but the appearance that REALLY blew me away was the one on Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network.

I know that CBN is to Christianity what Fox News is to journalism, but I am still shocked that they would have such a foul mouthed, nasty, hateful and slanderous person on their show as a friendly guest.

I just can't believe that some of the regular viewers weren't incensed. Surely there are a few 700 Club viewers left who have REAL Christian values. Certainly they’re not ALL blinded by the neocons and absolutely batshit crazy.

Ever the hopeful optimist.

We are responsible for Ann Coulter. Every time she goes on another televised Tourette spasm we blog about it. I know about her because I read about her constantly on our blogs. As I write this I am not sure that I can even remember the last time that I actually saw her on television. I find it astonishing that I would probably not know about her, except that my favorite blogs can't wait to describe her latest psychotic break.

I am at a point where I practically admire her for figuring out how to turn a profit on her profound instability. She is in on the joke and realizes just how vile and essentially worthless she is in the great scheme of things. However, she has managed to turn what would probably flatten most people into a profitable career. She is a one-note celebrity and there will come a point where people will tire of her. In continuing to elevate her through our own curiosity we are guaranteeing that when she does fall it will be a spectacle resembling the Hindenburg. Shame on us for contributing to that by breathlessly hanging on to every one of her breaks with reason.

Posted by: Ed | Jul 28, 2006 3:52:43 PM

I agree with Luddite. The more attention she gets everytime she attacks something/someone, the more fuel she feels she has to continue with her rants. She's basically using tabloid marketing on herself, and being wildly successful at it. The moment blogs and the media stop paying attention will be the moment she fades into black.

The FCC licenses networks to serve the public good. If language or statements are contrary to the public welfare you can complain directly to the FCC. Enough complaints or the serious nature of a complaint can result in fines and possible loss of licensing. Write to the FCC. And, go on MSNBC.com and let them know that you intend to complain directly to the FCC.

-For what it's worth, I wrote MSNBC online regarding this issue. Here's my letter:

Dear MSNBC Broadcasting,

As an American who honors truth, justice and the American Way I am shocked and astounded that MSNBC correspondent Chris Matthews interviewed Ann Coulter recently on Hardball. During this interview Ann Coulter was quoted as referring to Al Gore as "a total fag" and answered questions regarding Coulter's apparent belief in Bill Clinton's homosexuality, to which Matthews responded "We'd love to have her back". Ann Coulter does not speak for me nor does she represent anything honorable or American. Would Bill Gates, a man who has donated millions in the cure for AIDS and cancer through the Gates Foundation, condone such vehement disregard for tolerance and blatant offense towards homosexuals or anyone which Ann Coulter finds unworthy of her respect? As someone who stands for diversity, respect, tolerance and honor I am greatly disturbed by Ann Coulter's use of such derogatory terms as "fag" and find this highly unacceptable on any television network. Would laughter and tolerance have follows Ann Coulter's comments had she used such terms as "nigger", "kike" or "spic"? In a time of a divided country on such issues as gay marriage and equal rights I find Ms. Coulter's remarks that much more offensive. Ann Coulter's statements are in direct violation of FCC regulations and as such I intend on contacting the FCC directly regarding this matter. I do not stand alone in this issue and I will make it my personal mission in informing concerned parties in writing the FCC. Certainly MSNBC is aware that enough violations will result in fines and a possible loss of licensing. Lastly, as someone who owns stock in Microsoft, I will be dumping my company shares, as I do not wish to be associated with a company that condones such behavior. Thank you for your time and I sincerely hope MSNBC thinks twice before allowing such provocative and spiteful broadcasting in the future.

Posted by: Cory | Jul 28, 2006 4:43:22 PM

Cory, something about your letter really got me thinking about the whole FCC thing and you're absolutely right. I mean, if she had used those other words I'm sure there would have been total outrage, but "fag" seems to be sort of acceptable and at this moment that is pissing me off. God forbid the FCC let us get a flash of Janet Jackson's tit, but call the former Vice President a fag on TV and it's all good. I'm f---ing pissed off!!!

I liked the argument a while back when the KKK came out against Gay Marriage and someone came up with "You're either for the Klan or your for gays getting married".

Suddenly the room got real quiet.

I have to agree with the thread throughout the above; stop giving her air and BLOG time, and instead, go after the Chris Matthews (Chris! I hardly know ye!) and the FCC to sensure these matters.

Someone in NY should file a complaint with the state bar about her, she is a member of the NY state bar, and her comments are clearly a violation of atty ethics.

Posted by: Peter | Jul 28, 2006 5:33:11 PM

Like a tree falling in the woods, if people stop listening to her, will she make a sound?

Posted by: Steven. | Jul 28, 2006 5:33:34 PM

Yup, where the f*** are the gay activists? That is what is wrong with GLAAD, National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, etc. These groups should be on the offensive, especially GLAAD, in reponding back to MSNBC and asking why they allow such a homophobe to spill hate on their shows.

The reality too is that Ann is a CRYSTAL METH addict. Just look at the dark glasses she is wearing. Just like Hitler, these CRYSTAL METH addicts spill out hate and care less about anyone.

A conservative bitch without a conscience doing CRYSTAL METH. Sue the bitch!

Coulter's job is to distract us, and keep us talking about things that don't actually matter, so we aren't talking about things that do matter. I'm sure she's on the White House payroll to do this simple job.

Posted by: Dave | Jul 28, 2006 6:09:40 PM

Dave,

Ann Coulter referring to someone as "fag" on a network television show is important as it speaks to the intolerance and disrespect currently dividing America. I absolutely agree 100% that she should be ignored, but the issue here is not speaking up against a televised show which directly violated FCC protocal and more importantly not speaking up is tantamount to acceptance. I absolutely do what I can in important matters but even the "little things" do matter in the end. =)

Posted by: Cory | Jul 28, 2006 6:16:49 PM

Someone needs to chop off Ann Coulter's balls. As I understand it, making her a eunuch would make her much more calm, docile and less likely to act like a complete unhinged lunatic in public. Plus she wouldn't hump Rush Limbaugh's leg any longer...

Posted by: Robert In WeHo | Jul 28, 2006 6:56:17 PM

On another note, I think that black cocktail dress is all she owns for clothing. It's all she ever wears. As Kathy Griffin said, "What? Did she forget she had this interview and stayed out all night and then didn't change before she got here? I mean it's eight o'clock in the morning for God's sake!"

Here's the full Hardball interview with Chris Matthews, and surprisingly Matthews attacks her which pleasantly surprised me. Now I feel a little badly about writing MSNBC lol...

Thanks for the link Corey. Matthew's tried his best but he, like most people in his position, he doesn't understand how to intelligently and effectively counter her argumentative construct so that he is in charge of the discussion and not her. He tried his best but still stepped into her argumentative traps...

Posted by: Robert In WeHo | Jul 28, 2006 7:36:00 PM

Every once in a while we get someone who is so vile and self serving that we can't help but watch. Anyone remember Dr. Laura? When you look at Ann Coulter rationally, she's rather comic. Here's a woman who has a "take no prisoners" approach to speaking up for Conservatives and she does so (in nearly every interview I've seen her in) wearing a black cocktail dress. She didn't get the memo that conservative females must wear their hair up, have pearls and a powder blue business suit?? C'mon, the bitch is working it and she's working us and everyone gets a good chuckle. Once we stop giggling at the freak show we then must remind ourselves that Hitler wasn't taken seriously at first either.

Posted by: Mark | Jul 28, 2006 8:46:15 PM

I hate to sound like a strident boob, but Andy, you should figure out a way to lock all the pictures of Jake, David and Christiano until people send a complaint to the FCC thru your site.

I just sent one to fccinfo@fcc.gov, so please...can i have my Beckham now? :-)

Posted by: Becks07 | Jul 28, 2006 8:46:57 PM

Gay is not an insult and the right wing nut jobs hate that. They are ecstatic however that they have discovered they can say "fag" as often as they'd like. I swear I can't turn off the TV anymore without hearing it. They're almost giddy.

Almost nightly on Glen Beck you hear references to the "God hates fags group". He curls up his little nose as he finds that use questionable, but somehow manages to fit it in several times a night. I think he has made it perfectly clear other times how he really looks at it.

Then there is Ann Coulter's latest. (God, I don't know who would date her...it with her must be like plowing a bag of brittle, dead leaves.) Anyway she says she was joking.

Ann, if you are reading this I think you are a pathetic unfeeling c_ _t. That's a joke too. LOL.

Posted by: Jeff | Jul 28, 2006 8:49:02 PM

WE can bitch and moan and hold our breaths until Ann Coulter disappears or we pass out first. I assure you it will be the latter. When Chris Matthews was based in San Francisco, his man-on-helium voice was no lower but he was a decent "liberal" pundit. Going to Washington and getting his own show went to his head leaving no room for brains or integrity. He fell face first into that giant bubbling Beltway bowl of boiling shit in which no matter how fascistic other pundits are—from Pat Buchanan to William F. Buckley to Cal Thomas to Ann Coulter—they "really arent' that bad" because you see them all the time, have drinks, dinner, blah blah blah. I still want him to die for laughing at, amplifying Don Imus'es fudge packer Brokeback joke. And they can throw Don's and Coulter's bodies on top of him before they close the grave. He can "effectively counter" Coulter et al. very simply: DON'T HAVE HER ON!

Posted by: Leland | Jul 28, 2006 8:52:32 PM

Matthews DID do his homework, and called her on points...and she genuinely seemed to be flustered that he wouldn't quite let the points go. Yet, his repeated praise about her 'brilliance', and hype (inc. having a very supportive crowd) sounded clearly like orders from the producers (RATINGS..she gives us numbers!) It's all showbiz. Keith Olbermann (sp?) is making increasingly good ratings by bashing her and B O'R every night. Just showbiz on our side. Liddy Dole, a US Senator, came on after her.....THAT woman does not have a single brain cell in her head. Who does America talk about? Coulter, not US Senators.
What's really sad is not just the lack of gay leadership..there's no leadership anywhere. What Coulter does is preemptive strikes. She throws out bombs, destroying all in sight, because she knows she won't get called on it. Then the guerrilla fighters move in. Two weeks now of WWIII, two weeks now of "End of Days" on the news networks. People do watch this stuff, and it's repeated like a mantra, and YES, we end up giving it creedence by falling right in line with the same ineffectual responses.
I know I'm not offerring a solution. I don't know that I have one. I'd like to think that writing letters works... Every day I come back to the biggest success the right has had over the past 30 years has been at the local levels. They've built an infrastructure that affects school, local, and Congressional elections. They rule at that level. We're still fighting by the models of the 50's and 60's hoping that the new JFK or MLK Jr. will come along. The only places where the 'left' has repeatedly succeeded is when they have built up THEIR base..NYC, SF, Chicago, Boston, etc. That base THEN affected STATE politics..it didn't just happen by magic. Buffalo and Fresno and Rockford are pretty red areas. But those core cities took control of their state over time. Maybe that's it...the solution is ALL local. Local however is hard work. And not glamorous. We think that NYC-LA-SF-Chi really count in the big picture..but they don't. Those are just the fundraisers markets. GLAAD and HRC (my opinion) are in the business of fundraising. Until we take back Kansas City or Denver or Louisville or Cleveland we'll always be the minority party/players. We want to make an impact and write letters? Local tv/radio/print is much easier to influence. Local elections are much easier to sway. But then...LOL...you get involved in local politics and you get to be as jaded as me by seeing how conservative, and especially, corrupt gay 'leaders' can be. If we want leaders we need to create the climate for them, not just wait for our savior.

Posted by: PSMike | Jul 28, 2006 9:05:52 PM

Exactly PSMIKE, I agree, local politics/gov't are key in educating and opening the minds of American's, middle or otherwise. As I recently moved upstate from NYC, I immediately noticed a difference in local ideology and politics. My father is a Republican (hence we don't discuss politics lol) and I tend to be a moderate - social democratic but fiscally Republican - but I just can't relate to anyone who is so vehemently conservative/Republican. Any ways, back to your point, looking at the last two elections it's clear that the states which swung the vote most are in area's with small towns such as Ohio and Florida (small by comparison to NYC-CHI-LA, etc.) Keeping a strong hold on larger democratic states and focusing on educating weaker area's with smaller cities and local gov'ts sounds like a good step in the right direction...

Posted by: Cory | Jul 28, 2006 9:48:37 PM

This illustrates to me that the Republicans can’t sell books without using Gays as their whipping post. They can’t sell books, they can’t win elections, and they can’t sustain their churches without extolling hateful bigotry for Gays.
SPEAK OUT. How long are we going to be the whipping post for these people?

I'm sorry, but Andy, you've outdone yourself. This is literature!

So visual its scary....

Posted by: Peter | Jul 29, 2006 1:07:45 AM

Cory..thanks. I genuinely appreciate your reply. Our use of terminology is a another great example of the power of the neocons: We don't even have a good word for the broad group of us. "Moderates"? It's a 'nice' word. They're {standing tall, looking like a suited Mr. Clean} CONSERVATIVE..or NEO-CONS....we're....ummmm...{tiny mouse voice}'moderates'. Even we don't want to be called the Left or Liberals {that's Al Sharpton or really anyone from New York}. I think that's the most frustrating part. So many of us (talking about a much larger group than just GLBetc) want to move forward. We just know how to do it...maybe worse so many don't even see how far away we really are.

Posted by: PSMike | Jul 29, 2006 1:15:43 AM

A suggestion: the groups that just spent $250,000 on ads about gay marriage should spend the same amount to place another ad in the same papers [tho not the gay ones—save the money, we get it]. The ads simply say, in HUGE block letters:

FAG equals NIGGER equals KIKE equals SPIC!

AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE.

And YOU America; YOU Media; YOU Clergy shouldn't either.

Sincerely,
Your gay sons and daughters and sisters and brothers and fathers and mothers and grandmothers and grandfathers and aunts and uncles and cousins and neighbors.

Thank you.

Posted by: Leland | Jul 29, 2006 2:41:40 AM

I don't think we are responsible for giving Ann Coulter power by speaking or blogging about her. We are not giving her an audience, we are criticizing her and complaining about her. To NOT do so would be to give her power, and that is what people did for years during the "Bush owns the world, why bother?" period when it felt extreme conservatism had won. In my opinion, ignoring Ann Coulter would be the worst thing to do. MSNBC, in trying to out-FOX FOX, their support of her by giving her air time—now THAT is something to go after.

Posted by: Matthew Rettenmund | Jul 29, 2006 1:18:04 PM

Posted by: Pete Gilligan | Jul 29, 2006 11:45:17 PM

She was joking! The remark about Al Gore was a joke. She even said it was a joke. Liberals have no sense of humor when it comes to Ann Coulter. It's hysterical.

Why is okay for gays to throw the word fag around and joke about it, but if Ann Coulter does it, everyone gets their panties in a bunch?

If you don't like Ann, fine. Respond to her points. Don't just attack ehr by calling names, and don't resort to profanity. It shows a lack of class.

Chris Matthews, contrary to what some may desperately want to fantasize, did not discuss Ann's points. In fact, he practically conceded them. He focused on how she said things, not what she said. It seems to me that liberal critics are desperate to poison the well when it comes to Ann. They want everyone to hate how she says things so they won't actually hear what she is saying. They want her to make bland, dull arguments that nobody pays any attention to at all, or better yet, to say nothing and disappear.

For all the talk about fairness around here and people having rights to freedom of expression, it seems that many people here only care about freedom of expression they find appropriate. That is hypocrisy, plain and simple.

Resorting to profanity ridden, invective fueled, ad hominem arguments to shut Ann Coulter down says more about the people making such arguments than it does about Ann.

Ann doesn't really use profanity when she's making her arguments.

Yes, she uses invective, but never without making an intellectual argument about an issue.

Her critics tend to (perhaps deliberately) ignore her arguements and act as though all Ann does is call names, when, in fact, that's actually what most of her critics do: They call names (often laced with profanity) and never address anything she says on an intellectual level. They often quote her out of context, distort what she says, harp on mistakes Ann has made and accuse her of lying (a lie is when someone uses either print or speech to deliberately lead others to believe something that the liar knows to be untrue, making a factual error isn't a lie, deliberately spreading known factual errors is lying), or they insult her physical appearance.

I'm sorry, but for all of Ann's invective, she is nowhere near as offensive as most of her critics. The vitriolic profanity laden invective one can find in almost any blog that mentions her or anywhere where comments are allowed testify to what I am saying.

If you want to criticize her, please do, but keep it intellectual and respond to all of what she is actually saying (and make sure that you are not distorting her message). Responses like that would be much more impressive. I have yet to see anything like it, though.

Posted by: Marilyn | Jul 30, 2006 6:43:41 PM

Marilyn,

Are you on drugs?

Could she have gotten away with calling someone a nigger, even as a joke? I highly doubt it. Either we say that all name-calling is fair game and not offensive, or we have to fight so that people are equally offended by fag as they are by kike and spic.

Posted by: jmg | Jul 30, 2006 6:50:10 PM

So according to Marilyn calling a person a fag is intellectual speech. So following her logic that means all those people in the KKK are intellectuals. And when we’re being beaten with baseball bats while being called fags remember people like Marilyn are just being intellectuals.

Ann C is a "total hag".

Posted by: Cory | Jul 31, 2006 11:31:06 AM

If the word fag is so offensive, I would suggest that gay people stop using it among themselves.

Calling someone a fag isn't a good thing, I agree, but it will never be the same thing as calling someone a racial slur for several reasons:

1) Boys call each other fags all the time. It's a guy thing. They don't even always mean it as an insult.

2) The frequent use of the word fag among heterosexuals and homosexuals has diluted the power of the word.

3)The homosexual inclination will never be the moral equivalent of someone's race, no matter how many times homosexuals try to make everyone think it is.

Posted by: Marilyn | Aug 2, 2006 2:53:54 PM

Marilyn,

Twisted logic is your forte. I don't call anyone that name and none of the Gays I know say that to each other. It's always used as a put down by straight people. I can't change my sexuality just as I can't change the color of my skin.

Your last comment proves what a homophobic bigot you are.
