Chilean gay activists optimistic about country's new attitude toward gays: "There are few people or institutions who would dare to say that homosexuality is perverse, pathological, and that we need to round up the homosexuals and take them to an island. They said these things easily five or 10 years ago. Chile is in the process of a profound transition in terms of ethics and values."

For starters, define 'unprotected'. That might seem obvious to most people, but there are those who consider oral sex w/o a condom to be 'unprotected'. So if that's what these researchers are looking for, I'd actually picture the number to be well over 50%... probably double that.
If you're actually talk about anal penetrative sex w/o a condom... and that number is really 50%... god help us. I've never felt like a prude before, but there you go.

Brandon hasn't gotten the memo yet: Pale is the new tan.

I'm skeptical as well of this 50% number. The problem as others have pointed out, is that the article does not define the terms, or give any details. Maybe the results were that 50% have had unprotected anal sex at some point in their lives, rather than regularly (neither surprising, nor particularly troubling). The way it's reported, the reader has no context in which to interpret the results.

that is such a typical 365Gay.com type article (i realize they just got it from elsewhere). I agree with the comments above...it has seemingly no criteria and no good information. In an overwhelmingly Catholic country that JUST 15 years ago was the poorest in Western Europe how can they even quantify the numbers of gay men who got tested? Outside of Dublin how many gay men are out or have decent access to tasting facilities? Jesus, Mary and Joseph (yeah, I'm an American mick)a lot of Irish-Americans are still afraid to come out. It's a shame when stuff like that goes out as 'facts'.

Ah, Jesus, Mike, it's not that bad here (yes, I'm Irish). There are dedicated STD clinics in most major Irish towns (http://www.shb.ie/content1348011426_1.cfm). We may have been one of the poorest 20 years ago but we're one of the richest in Europe now. Things have improved.
There's not much detail in any of the other articles on the survey, HOWEVER, the 49% is those that "have taken part in unprotected sex". Not those that regularly do it (although most people know once is enough).

Cleveland "AIDS director" Bill Tiedemann is a big fucking drama queen whose HIV prevention programs for gay men have been practically non-existent.
Tead the original, longer story in the Plain Dealer: http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1153038796164110.xml&coll=2
If you know the situation in Cleveland, you'll wonder why all of these "leaders" are making such a stink about HIV and a bathhouse, considering they have all but abandoned prevention efforts for anyone who isn't a minority woman or under-18 kid. None of whom will be going to a bathhouse.

PSMike: You're so right. I don't have access to decent tasting facilities either. I wish Vin Diesel would open and operate one.

Yeah its such political BS that blood donation centers don't allow gay men and women to donate. The politicians are hiding behind this idea that gays have more cases of HIV then the rest...which is just not true!
That being said, make sure to contact your congress man and support blood donation by finding a center at a site like http://bloodbanker.com

OK, am I the only one physically disgusted (and somewhat frightened) by the idea that someone drugged another man and then raped him and infected him with HIV?

Kevin, you're right about Ireland's turnaround. I meant to refer to the old data, not the new (that 70% figure). Still, like any 'sky is falling' data it would be nice if there was some objectivity. As was raised earlier....are they counting oral sex? I still read all the time a caution to wear condoms during oral sex. Does anyone do that?
and Derrick....I'd fly across the country for that too. ;-)
