Try to Scare Something Up
So this Halloween I've agreed to help judge a contest being put together by our friends over at CampBlood, a site that focuses on all things queer in horror cinema.
Here are the details: Take a picture of yourself as a murder victim — the bloodier, the better. For those of you with "victim issues" we'll also accept photos of vampires, demons, crazed killers, and pretty much anything else — as long as it's creative, of course.
Email your photos to contest@campblood.org before noon on October 24th. The winner will receive a Hellbent Halloween survival kit which includes a Hellbent DVD signed by director Paul Etheredge, popcorn, a few Halloween novelties and a few surprise tricks and treats.
Remember, it's Halloween, so have fun, and don't be afraid to be politically incorrect.
ALSO,
There are a couple of other contests going on around the blogosphere that I've been meaning to tell you about.
The first is the 1st Annual Gay Bloggies being thrown by our friends over at Queerclick (which is an excellent NSFW page-turner if you've never visited). They're giving out a couple dozen awards in a variety of categories.
The second is the GLBT Verve Weblog Awards handing out prizes in all kinds of categories.
I encourage you to practice for the upcoming November elections and get out and vote for your favorites, and of course I'd be mighty flattered if that favorite happened to be Towleroad.

Andy: I'd love to vote for you in all the categories, but to do that, I'm going to need to see photos of you bucko...I mean really, without something juicy I can't vote for you as my favorite porn star blog.

Can I do a Florida, circa 2000 and vote for Towleroad 200 times?

I for one always noticed a sort of "gay undertone" to many horror films--particularly Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge.
(Okay, dumb hetero question: what is the difference between using "gay" and "queer"? Do they mean the same thing? Are they at all different? I never figured it out!)
The film itself isn't that great, but the notion of the the male protaganist's latent hommosexual impulses combined with Freddy Krueger's attempts to "come out" are pretty clear; too bad the rest of the movie was so subpar this interesting psychological subplot didn't have much chance to materialize into something better.

..."Remember, it's Halloween, so have fun, and don't be afraid to be politically incorrect."
Huh? example, please..

Jason: I think the "gay" and "queer" question could get a hundred million answers. My Dog, there have been whole books written on what it is to be "queer" and it seems to me that "queer" is more an adjective applying more to behavior while "gay" applies more to a person's sexuality. I've known some very queer straight people.
Incidentally, there are no dumb hetero questions, just dumb heteros...like GWB, f'r instance.

I'm predicting lots of "gay bashing victim" entries!
Posted by: Anita Woodward | Oct 18, 2006 5:23:55 PM
Oh gawd, is it already that time of year again? (i.e. time for inane blogger awards... not Halloween, which is fun!)
Let the drama begin. Someone call Ethan Reynolds.

Anita, that isn't funny at all.
Posted by: CF | Oct 18, 2006 8:08:42 PM
Murder victim! Yeah! Cool idea!!!
I'll be Matthew Shepard...will someone else go as a fence?
Cool!!! Murder is FUNNY!!!

CF, of course it's not funny. This entire contest isn't funny. When every other entry on this blog is about some guy getting beaten up or killed in a hate crime, how could be even remotely appropriate to have a contest in which readers dress up as murder victims? And, frankly, I'd like to know how I should interpret Andy's insistence on our being "politically incorrect." How else could one be politically incorrect in a way other than what Anita or Stinky suggested? Please, Andy, answer that for me.

Gay is what they may call us, and queer is what we are allowed to call ourselves. If they even try and call me a queer, I'll scratch their eyes out. See?
Posted by: mymymichl | Oct 19, 2006 12:33:43 AM
Stinky - I'll be your fence, but can I see what you look like first?
Posted by: mymymichl | Oct 19, 2006 12:35:49 AM
Wow, everyone...chill. Horror movies aren't serious and Halloween isn't supposed to be "real" either. Pretending and "playing" with the concept of death is as old as civilization. The pagan beginnings of the holiday were about that..."Ring around the rosie, a pocket full of posies..." (look it up). Halloween is made for people of all ages to deconstruct death, and murder victims are fair game. It isn't just for fun, it is part of the ritual. Get over it. Relax the sphincter a bit Toby, Anita, Stinky, etc. kay?

"..."Remember, it's Halloween, so have fun, and don't be afraid to be politically incorrect."

Personally, I was thinking along the lines of one person dressing up as a walking Bill of Rights, and the other dressing up as George W. Bush, and the person in the Bush costume gets to chase the person in the Bill of Rights costume while bludgeoning them with a big aluminum bat repeatedly and relentlessly.
Or if violence isn't your thing, the person in the Bush costume can just print out "Habeas Corpus" on a bunch of toilet paper, wipe their ass with it, and throw it all over everyone they know.

Jeffrey, don't tell me to "chill" or "get over it." I know the origins of Halloween, I'm not retarded, but thanks for the Wikipedia lesson. I think I made a few valid points, and I hardly think I'm being oversensitive here, given the bizarre timing of this contest. And Jeffrey, this contest isn't here for "people of all ages to deconstruct death" - it's here for Andy to make a few bucks from the Camp Blood people.
And K.S. that's not politically incorrect, it's predictable and trite.

I think this is all done in the spirit of Halloween and Horror Flicks. No need to get so uptight over it. I believe when the rules say don't worry about being "Politically In-Correct" it is referring to the "Politically Correct" opinion about Horror Movies in general...meaning such movies cause violence, etc, etc. I don't think they meant to imply that gay bashing was at all appropriate, etc. It's just Halloween and this contest is a tribute to that and the genre of cheesy horror flicks.
Posted by: Patrick | Oct 19, 2006 8:24:35 AM
It's Halloween. I would hope that people can see the difference between a holiday and a real life hate crime. And if you don't think I treat hate crimes with the utmost seriousness, click over to the topics menu and choose the "crime" category.

Thanks for respecting those of us with "victim issues." You coined a new term, Andy!
Still waiting for your explanation of a politically incorrect murder victim. I guess I'll have to wait for October 31 for that one. Or maybe you can just answer that for me in another patronizingly glib comment.
Posted by: Anita Woodward | Oct 19, 2006 9:09:50 AM
And just to make it perfectly clear, perhaps I should have said "irreverent" rather than "politically incorrect". The contest is in the spirit of horror flicks. I'm not suggesting anyone dress up as a gay bashing victim.

Toby still to this day knows how to be more vocal and coy about his thoughts than about any other gay blogger out there. We all miss you ;)

Oh for Dog's sake! Some of you guys must have utterly dustless and germ-free houses, you're so tight assed! Have some fun, drink some beer, dress up in women's clothing and tape a plastic knife to your throat.
Oh great heavenly days, I've expressed unrepentant hedonism, alcoholism, insincere transvestism, misogynism and anti-Mormanism. How politically incorrect!

\"dress up in women\'s clothing and tape a plastic knife to your throat.\"
Andy says we can submit any costume \"as long as it\'s creative\" - so unfortunately your concept is not eligible.
Posted by: Anita Woodward | Oct 19, 2006 10:37:29 AM
Let's get a whole bunch of Matthew Shepards!!! I haven't stopped busting a gut since I read this...and that post about a woman with a knife to her throat almost made me heave up my pancreas.
What a bunch of crap...I'm within scrolling distance of no end of violence against gays on this site and Andy wants us to celebrate murder. Sorry, Andy, but you've created -- rightly so! -- a culture of abhorrence to violence here, so to drop this little turd in the bowl is one helluva whiplash.
Have fun looking at the murder victim pics...maybe while you're doing that, another gay or lesbian will get killed and you can post about it the next morning in righteous indignation.

Sorry Andy, you missed it on this one. It's just sick.

This is the most tastelessly desperate plea for attention I've seen on any blog, ever. Maybe you should just quit while you're ahead, Andy.
