Court Says Israel Must Recognize Same-Sex Marriages

In what is being hailed by gay rights activists as an historic ruling, Israel's High Court has ruled that same-sex couples married in countries where gay marriage is legal can be registered as married couples in Israel:

Gayisrael_1"A sweeping majority of six justices to one ruled that the common-law marriages of five gay couples obtained in Toronto, Canada, can appear as married on the population registry."

Opponents argued that Israel "lacks the appropriate legal framework for such marriages" and thus cannot recognize them. The Court disagreed.

Given the recent violence displayed by the ultra-orthodox Jewish community with regard to the recent Gay Pride festivities in Jerusalem, the Civil Rights Association called the decision "all the more important."

Not surprisingly, ultra-Orthodox Jews were appalled by the ruling. Said one lawmaker: "We don't have a Jewish state here. We have Sodom and Gomorrah here. I assume that every sane person in the State of Israel, possibly the entire Jewish world, is shocked, because the significance is... the destruction of the family unit in the State of Israel."

  1. So, swap out a few words and this is the same quote:

"We don't have an Aryan state here. We have Sodom and Gomorrah here. I assume that every sane person in Germany, possibly the entire world, is shocked, because the significance is... the destruction of the family unit..."

I believe Hitler made this same argument as he was implementing his Final Solution.

Yes, a little over the top, but how quickly these guys forget history!

  2. We are so lucky to be living in a time when every hope our community could ever realize is begining to take shape. Lets never forget all those who came before us in this fight.

  3. Why such muted celebration here? Note that Andy spends over half his post bemoaning the opposition. Missing are the snarky remarks noting that Israel now has more gay rights than Amerika (as was said here recently regarding the granting of mere civil unions in Mexico)?

This happening is more evidence that Israel is a far more gay-friendly than its neighboring countries -- some of whom apply the death penalty to homosexuals (and do so in gruesome ways). Given the differential treatment of gays in Israel versus Palestine, it's time to rethink where our sympathies should lie -- and time to rethink our blind devotion to so-called liberal positions that defend vehemently anti-gay socities.

    Discuss.

  5. Go Israel puts it well. I have been appalled as well by the inability of lefty queers to recognize that the left's favorite people, the Palestinians and their Arab and Persian supporters, would quicker tie them up by their testes (or other private bits) than accept their assistance in the anti-Israeli cause.

  6. Amen to that, BBOY.

  7. Great comments, Bboy and GoIsrael.

I find most gays and lesbians to be ignorant of how gay-positive Israel is as a society.

It's unfortunate that the radical leftists take advantage of this ignorance to fill their heads with lies about Israel and teach them that they should, by definition, identify with the Palestinians because they are both "oppressed" groups.

I would like to see what would happen if these anti-Israel leftists tried marching through the West Bank holding a sign declaring themselves "Queers For Palestine."
