road.jpg Sports announcer Billy Packer responds to questions about his comment to Charlie Rose that the sportscaster always "fags out" on him. Rose: "I said he fagged out on me, and it had nothing to do with sexual connotation. I got to know Charlie a number of years ago and have great admiration for his program and intellect. I can assure you I will use that phrase again and I won't think twice about it."

Flash_mobroad.jpg 4,000 flash mob dancers take over Victoria train station in London: "A deafening 10-second countdown startled station staff and commuters before the concourse erupted in whoops and cheers. MP3 players and iPods emerged and the crowd danced wildly to their soundtracks in silence - for two hours."

  1. Is it impeachment time yet?

  2. Billy Packer is a jackass. Dictionary.com defines nigger as "a victim of prejudice similar to that suffered by blacks; a person who is economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised." So since that definition has no racial connotation, is it OK to use Billy??

  3. I'm hoping to get the HPV vaccine myself. The idea that only women should get it is a great disservice to gay men.

  4. Faggot Billy is a Faggot for using the word Faggot. If Billy (the Faggot) uses the word Fag again, I will have to ban his Faggot Fag ass from ever speaking to my Fag ass again. Stupid Faggot Fag.

  5. Nota Bene: the juxtaposition of words into "PREVENTIVE cure" not "cure" alone, meaning, I believe, no suggestion that it can cure you of such cancers after they've already developed.

In any case, Anon, one trusts you're not suggesting that you don't use condoms during anal sex [though, HPV can be contracted even with them since areas that are not covered by a condom can be exposed to the virus].

  6. "Faggot Billy is a Faggot for using the word Faggot."

This sentence would make sense in a universe where Billy Packer used the word "faggot." He said "fag out." And, from the context, he didn't mean fag in the way the gays have co-opted it.

Are we so eager to fight this fight that we no longer pay any attention to context? And is the English language static, or is it fluid?

I think as readers, we're smart enough to know when someone says "fag" pejoratively, and when it's meant for other subsequent definitions. At least, I hope we're smart enough.

  7. Leland is correct (albeit wordy and essentially incomprehensible to most of us).

The HPV vaccine is preventative. If you are a sexually active gay man, the chances are extremely high that you already have the virus even if you don't display symptoms. So the vaccine probably won't do you any good.

Studies are being performed to determine if the vaccine should also be given to boys. From WebMD: "Merck is also continuing to research use of the vaccine in boys and men, as they can also become infected with HPV, which could lead to genital warts."

  8. When my mates say they're "fagd out" they mean they are "fatigued".

When someone asks me if I "got a fag?", I reply that I don't smoke.

  10. "Fag out" is apparently the new "niggardly."

  11. Moi? I'm a paranoid hypocondriac safe-sex fanatic. However, HPV is just too easy to get, so a vaccine is the way to go. Most vaccines are preventative, not curative.

  12. God, we get it already...some of you will grasp at the first chance that Andy presents to type the n-word-it's like you get an orgasmic thrill from it. And all under the ruse of 'making a point' which countless other guys on here have made before you the instant they see a picture of a black person. Is the groupthink among gay men so entrenched, are gay men so unimaginative that they all have a Pavlovian response to any thread dealing with *one* black person's homophobia-"Well how about I call you the n-word? How does that feel? (he cant hear you and he doesnt read Towleroad, so he doesnt feel anything)" And you actually feel like this is an original argument? It's so tired.

  13. Try to comprehend this, ChrisB: you clearly don't understand that there are some 40 types of HPV [genital human papillomavirus]. The vaccine is thought to offset four of them. Per the CDC, "Few young women are infected with all four of these HPV types." Therefore, assuming that model, in the absence of research to the contrary, it is wrong of you to state that it probably won't do any good for a man who has already been sexually active.

Further, the research into the vaccine's efficacy for boys and men is not just to prevent diseases in them but to prevent them from passing HPV to women sexual partners [and, of course, male partners]

  14. "Fagged out" refers to the British usage of fag as a lighted stick. It means that the flame is out -- tired or something of that nature. It is not used as a reference to gay men.

If you have any doubt, check out Merriam Webster:

  16. Yes, Leland, you win. You are clearly superior. The rest of us cretins merely cower at your brilliant command of the english language and your uncanny knowledge of Reichen's every move.

  18. Good to see a gay person be grand marshall of a gay pride parade.

Judy continues to be a source of strength.

Go figure the page program explodes after the scandal. Never underestimate teenagers eagerness to be sexually harassed. LOL

  19. I agree with Charles. This constant comparing blacks with gays on every thing needs to stop. There are significant differences. Yes, in a general sense you can compare both human rights struggles.

  21. Billy Packer is white, no?

    Posted by: Jason | Apr 5, 2007 10:58:07 PM

  22. jesus, fags are so uppity. the opposite of gay pride? faggots who get their panties in a bunch upon hearing someone use a legitimate (even if antiquated) form of the word "fag" without any intent of prejudice. i don't like billy packer because of how he calls basketball games, but in this instance, good on him for not trying to appologize -- he doesn't need to. we do, for beings such reactive bitches.

  23. I don't know if the people who cry foul to the media are explaining the issue correctly aka substitute fag/gay for idiot/retarded.

The same excuses are given for "meaning homosexual" when it's not even about that.

I don't believe HRC & GLAAD are addressing the correct problem.

    Posted by: baophac | Apr 6, 2007 1:20:19 PM

  24. Look at what Billy Packer said. He meant "f@g out" as in wimp out. Not the way the dictionary defines the term as to tire out.

Read the dictionary and place the meaning of "f@g out" in. It doesn't make sense. Stop trying to defend the indefensible.

  25. we do [need to apologize], for beings such reactive bitches.

You're free to apologize for existing all you want Holden. Nothing stops you.
