Colombian Gays Protest Derailment of Same-Sex Union Bill

A small group of gay and lesbian activists and supporters gathered before Bogota's Congress yesterday after an evangelical lawmaker used a procedural vote to derail a proposed civil union bill that last week had been approved by a vote of 62-43.

The wily move was made when many of the bill's supporters were absent, and the bill was defeated by a vote of 34-29. According to the AP, "The call for individual votes was unusual, and some said unprecedented. Parties usually vote as blocs on the final, reconciled versions of bills in Colombia's legislature. Sen. Armando Benedetti, a sponsor of the bill, vowed to restart the legislative process when Congress reconvenes on July 20, and he criticized [President Alvaro] Uribe (who is a supporter of the bill) for not defending the initiative more forcefully."

  1. Honest question:

Do these people really think that they are helping the cause by showing up at legitimate rallies for important causes and putting on a freak show?

I am all for people who are transexual or transvestites. I don't think that the people in these pictures are either transexual or transvestite. They are attention whores who don't give one rat's ass about gay rights or marriage equality. They simply thrive on the attention that they command by turning mainstreet into a slasher drag ball, all the while causing much more harm than good by magnifying every outrageous stereotype that makes people fear gay people in the first place. People in Colombia (and everywhere else) are told that gay people are freaks that are trying to destroy Christians and the Church. How do these people respond? By showing up in over the top caricature costumes, including a sexualized nuns costume complete with thigh high stockings. NOT very smart and certainly NOT very effective in winning the hearts and minds of the masses in Catholic Colombia (or anywhere else).

This display will do one, or both, of two things. People will be terribly offended or they will come to the conclusion that gay people can't be taken seriously because they don't take themselves, their plight or anything else seriously or they will both be offended AND not take us seriously.

There is a time and a place for slasher drag shows. In my opinion this wasn't the time or the place.

Are these people clueless? Are they so self absorbed that they just don’t care, or are they actively trying to kill the progress in gay rights because they get some sick thrill from being treated like crap?

    I honestly don’t get it.

Your first guess is the correct one: attention whores. They are protected by the unwritten rule that one does not criticize the freakier segments huddling under the LGBT umbrella.

  4. Oh come on! Snowhite and the other witch just added some color to the protest...
I live in Colombia and those two got coverage on every local newscast that was reporting about the protest...It is not that harmful at all...Just colorful...Other images were shown as well...
The other image that circulated widely was that of gay couples kissing : Normally gays never do that in public here...Except for the only gay pride marches that exist in two of Colombia's largest cities: Medellin and Bogota.
Besides : the transgender community is the most discriminated against everywhere...So it is good that they put on makeup and represent!

  5. That pic of the two fags kissing is gross and I'm gay - that pda shiz does nothing for our fight - makes us look like freaks...the "in your face" publicity doesn't work...

  6. The two ¨fags¨kissing might not be cute but...In Colombia that in-your-face image still is new for most people...What are those colombian gays thinking? Just probably that the public needs to see that so everybody gets used to it as a daily ocurrence...
I think the LGBT movement is just in its ¨stonewall stage¨ so to speak: when not many things have been tested and people do not know what works and what does not ...Yeah: the colombian gay movement is just in its infancy. Therefore the quick adoption of the rainbow flag and other iconic gay imagery that frankly has little to do with our colombian idiosyncrasy...
So please cut those protestors [the show-off kissers and the drag-queens]some slack ...they mean well even when they are not looking cute or very serious...

  7. Zeke,
    You said it best.

How can these freak shows promote the cause and achieve the goals of normal, everyday homosexuals and lesbians?

It is the worst possible way to impress straight folk.

  8. "Freak Shows", oh Stephen, you never dissappoint. Of course, if the everyday homosexuals (or gays, as some people call them)and lesbians would get off their asses and do something maybe the streets wouldn't be filled with "freaks."

  10. I was driving last night
    with the headlights off
    no moon to speak of
    but enough light was available
to keep the car on the road

    I thought about the year
    you hid in the library
    during that time
    I smoked too much pot
    with the headphones on
    to keep it all away

    I had some friends
    a couple of them died.
    I don't miss them anymore.

    So everyone on my planet
    Got pushed out of orbit
I drove them to the edge of the solar system
threatened with death should they return
came back to the coldest place on earth
    and made myself at home
