80's Metal Band Skull Shouts at the Devil

Skulls

BoingBoing yesterday showed off this genius skull made of melted 80's metal band tapes by Brian Dettmer, which I find has more depth as a piece of "art" than Damien Hirst's $100 million extravagance, "For the Love of God". Although it is perhaps a bit incorrect to disregard Hirst's piece simply for its excess, as that's partly what it's about.

I do love that Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil" is the basis for the tape skull's jaws.

  1. Damien is more of an arts and crafts person rather than a real artist. His work is more "commodity" than fine art. However since fine art is dead anyway and concept is in then more power to him. That doesn't mean his work is any good though.
